Paulo Cuevas is a Colombian vocalist, keyboardist, songwriter and producer. He is known for singing in several metal bands like Sigma, Phoenix Reborn and Andüril, and playing the keyboards in death metal band Agorar.
Paulo was first introduced to music by his parents, who had him sing in choirs directed by his father, since he was 4 years old. At age 5 he began taking piano lessons, which were interrupted by a trip to North America. At age 6 he starts playing the violin, following the steps of his older brother. At age 11 he takes interest in the piano once again, taking lessons and building up a much higher interest in music.
In the year 2001 Paulo’s older brother, Francisco Cuevas, forms a metal band with a friend from school. The project begins as a guitar duet and Paulo joins them in the keyboards, later on becoming the band’s singer. The band's first line-up is finally complete by 2002 and receives the name Andüril. The band is influenced by groups such as Angra, Helloween, Opeth, Iron Maiden, etc… and includes the use of string instruments, such as violin and violoncello. By the end of 2002, they record their first EP, never released because of problems with the record label. In 2003 they play the opening act for Spanish band Mago de Oz, but in 2004 the band splits up because of personal issues.
After Andüril, Paulo joins several bands of different genres (from progressive rock to black metal) mostly playing the keyboards and occasionally singing. In year 2005 he joins his brother in a project that later on gives birth to the band Agorar.
In the year 2006 he founds Sounds of Lunacy with his brother and guitar player Juan Pablo Hormiga. He learns to play drums and guitar for composition purposes, and plays for a year guitar and violin in an acoustic duet with Tariq Burney.
In the year 2007, Paulo joins the band Phoenix Reborn as front man and vocalist. He also meets guitar player Andrés Ãlvarez, and becomes the keyboard player for the band Sigma.
With Sigma Paulo has the chance to play in several important performances throughout 2007 such as supporting US band Symphony X, playing next to Colombian band Kraken, and playing in Rock al Parque 2007 (biggest south American rock festival).By November 2007, Sigma releases their first live album, called Slilver Tears, with the performance of some of Sigma’s instrumental songs. Paulo usually played keyboards only, singing maybe a cover song at the end of the act. Before the end of 2007, Paulo becomes the official singer of Sigma, changing the focus of the band and releasing their first EP with vocals in December 2007.
In 2008 Sigma participates in an event called “The Troopersâ€, giving them a place in the Colombian Tribute to Iron Maiden: The Golden Beast.
Later this year, Paulo is chosen as part of the backing band for the Brazilian guitar player Kiko Loureiro, playing the keyboards from the albums No Gravity and Universo Inverso in a couple of life performances, and singing cover songs from Angra, Metallica, Dio and Iron Maiden.
Currently Paulo is recording with Sigma, Agorar and his own solo project.
