.. THIS IS WHERE YOUR BIO INFO GOES BELOW..The name Militant Military may evoke thoughts of a Public Enemy rebirth. But this group of young soljahs, rebels, and revolutionaries are on a slightly different mission. Consisting of nine members – Soljah, Ms. Williams, Malitia, State, J.O., V?X, D.A., A.M.P. and DJ M.I. – the group’s sheer size is daunting enough. But what makes Military truly exceptional, before we’ve even gotten to the music, is what the group represents in the life of each and every one of its members.
Ranging in age from 21 to 28, the lives of all nine group members have been intertwined since their high school years and even earlier in some cases. United under the undisputed leadership of 24-year-old Soljah, Militant Military? came together out of not only a love for music, but also a true determination to advance their careers and serve as an example to their communities.
In the two years since Militant Military? officially coalesced as a group, they’ve learned to sacrifice and play their positions for the greater good of the team – a responsibility each member assumes without hesitation. They started out as a group of friends with a common goal. Soon, impromptu studio sessions turned into mandatory “write nights.â€
The group would come together in the completed studio they had built out of their own resources and spend a set amount of time working on their lyricism, stage presence, and overall presentation of their music as a group. Before long, the wheels were in motion.
In the summer of 2006, Militant Military? released its first mixtape album, No Better Friend, No Worst Enemy, in an effort to raise funds to further the movement. All hands were immediately on deck, including honorary member Lil’ Miss Monica – by far the group’s greatest and most hands-on supporter.
From the preceding marketing campaign, which saw the slogan “Military?†plastered all over the Tampa/St. Petersburg area; to the hand-to-hand sales field trips, providing curious listeners with the dopest product to hit the Tampa Bay music scene, each member played their part. This may have been before their operation was organized enough for SoundScan, receipts or even copyrights for that matter, but with the average weekend yielding $1300 in sales, at $5 a CD, for the first two months following the release of No Better Friend…, they knew they were on to something.
In the year since, they have finalized the upgrades to their studio, creating a truly professional workspace that is even utilized by other local artists. With all contracts and paperwork now in order, Militant Military? is now in the process of releasing their first single, “In Da Bikke.†The single, which will first be promoted in the Southeast in late 2007, will hopefully be the first step towards securing a national distribution deal. The group has also launched a men’s clothing line, Mili Mill Mfg., and its sister women’s line, Espionage.
It’s obvious that Militant Military is more than prepared to put in the effort needed to attain success. But can they avoid the pitfalls that have brought down other groups before them? Connecting with their fans will be simple enough.
There are the stories of so many urban American youngsters: products of Reaganomics whose stories have been largely ignored in the greater histories of their cities. And they all managed to overcome the perils of the streets to come together as a “State of Mind Equipped with an Army of Souljahs to Fight a Battle for God.†Nine different points of view; nine different Soljahs’ testimonies of how we can each rise above society’s expectations to serve a greater good. And since there is strength in numbers, the unit that houses these nine distinctively unique voices can’t help but win.
This isn’t some prefabricated, cookie-cutter crew, assembled to fatten some exec’s wallet. As hard as they work together, they play and pray together. The older members in the crew serve as mentors to keep the younger ones on track. The women make sure their boys are cared for.
They support and love each other whole-heartedly, and most importantly, treat what they’ve created with the respect that gave birth to Militant Military to begin with. Yeah, every other crew or label can claim to be a family, but this right here is the prototype.
