V.O. Quartet

About Me

The name V.O.Quartet comes from the Spanish “Versión Original” (Original version) which you see on advertisements for films shown in their original language. V.O. Quartet is composed of 4 classically trained musicians, Naomi Wedman, Rebecca Macauley and Kirsten Tinkler (who met whilst playing together for a production of Shakespeare´s “Tempest” in 2003) and Frances Bartlett, who joined the group in October 2005. A typical V.O. concert will make you want to dance in places, or at least tap your toes, will definitely make you laugh out loud and you will probably find your hair standing on end as you experience haunting harmonies and strong melodies written by this exciting combination of four talented women. As, separately, they are involved with other performing arts such as theatre, circus, dance and cabaret, they are willing to go beyond the typical musical format to communicate with their audience. Their shows are intimate and chatty and their personalities and humour shine through during and between the musical items. VO Quartet has played in widely varying venues throughout Barcelona and tailors their repertoire to suit the occasion. Current projects include experimentation with electronic music (collaborating with djs and producers), folk instruments, improvisation, singing, movement and story-telling. They are also involved in education and social work, doing concerts for children and the elderly. Since Frances joined the group, the first album “Breakfast Collection” has been recorded and they have performed in: Sensorial Festival, Barcelona, Femelek Festival, Barcelona, Apolo2 (nightclub), Barcelona, Ribermusica Festival, Topazi 11 (Gallery) in Gracia, Sidecar (Night club and music venue) in Barrio Gótico, La Serilla (cultural space) in the Raval, Electric Bar (performance space) in Gracia, Miscelanea (gallery) in the Raval, Can Mas Deu, women´s day festival.

Influences: Although classically trained, the four women who form the group have a wide range of musical tastes and experience and, as their entire repetoire has been composed by them, these influences are evident in their music and in their playing. These other flavours include world music such as folk from Ireland, Great Britain and South America, Klezmer, Gypsy, traditional music from Quebec, pop and jazz. This is coupled with a continuing interest and involvement in contemporary and classical music.
