Envy Joy is a rock band from Chico California, USA. Its music portrays a combination of orchestra, classical and rock with a melodic sensitivity. The band is now a four piece band consisting of Eriko Itobayashi (vocal, piano), Leng Thao (bass), Yo Sae Lor (drum), and Peng Her (guitar). Each member brings with them a diverse musical background that adds to their performances and music. Everything started with Eriko, from Osaka, Japan. She started playing and studying classical music at age three, and her childhood dream was to study music in America as a professional pianist and composer. In 2004, Eriko accomplished one of her long time goal of coming to America to study abroad, pursuit in, double majoring in music at California State University of Chico (CSU Chico). As her first year at CSU, Chico, she competed and was the first freshman ever to win the Kruska Classical Piano Audition. Her performance was extraordinary which caught the attention of bass player Leng which he is currently attending CSU, Chico majoring in music industry. Leng and Eriko became friends and Leng was introduced to some of Eriko’s pieces which lead to the idea of starting a band. Leng asked Yo Sae Lor, a long time friend and active drummer, to join the band. Lor brought in some background in metal, nu-rock and funk to spice up the flavor. Finally, a former member of Kando, a slow ballad band from Chico, Peng was invited into the band, who had many experiences with music composition in the small Hmong Music Industry. Envy Joy, which is managed by Leng, is out to illustrate that classical and orchestra, pop, and traditional Hmong melodies can be bend with rock balanced with a melody in their work.
