MILAN LINK LIFTS HENRY
Arsenal captain Thierry Henry has admitted it is "great to hear" of AC Milan's interest in him.And the France striker, who has also been linked with a move to Barcelona over the last 18 months, claims the whole club has been unsettled by vice-chairman David Dein's departure last season. On the Milan link Henry told The Sun: "That is great to hear. How can it be anything else?""As I have said many times, at the moment I am an Arsenal player. But everyone knows that a lot of stuff has happened at the club recently that wasn't supposed to happen."So the only thing I can tell you is right now I am an Arsenal player but I cannot deny it's nice to hear about Milan."Dein left the Gunners in April after a disagreement on a potential takeover and Henry said his influence around the club had been noticeable already."The bosses have been unsettled and a lot of players at the club have been unsettled," he added."I was devastated when Mr Dein left the club. I don't know what happened and I don't want to know but whatever went on, Mr Dein leaving was not a clever move."Although no one is bigger than the club, Arsene Wenger and Mr Dein are really close to being Arsenal."So if you ask me if there was one person on the board I would not like to see leaving, I would have said Mr Dein."Unfortunately it is out of my hands. I don't agree with what has happened but sometimes that's the way things are. We just have to move on."0K 0K IM BACK AND T0 START IT 0FF CHECK 0UT THIS ST0RY I RAN ACR0SS...THIS WILL MAKE Y0U THINK TWICE BEF0RE G0ING T0 A GAME IN LIVERPOOL...
PARRY BLASTS UEFA CLAIMS (football365)
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry insists UEFA should focus on their own shortcomings in their organisation of the Champions League final rather than trying to "deflect attention" on to Reds fans by branding them as the worst behaved in Europe.
A UEFA report which will be presented to sports minister Richard Caborn tomorrow will brand Liverpool fans the worst in Europe.
European football's governing body, who commissioned undercover police agents to compile the report over the last four years, say there have been more incidents involving Reds supporters than anyone else.
The report paints a damning picture of the Anfield club's fans' behaviour at last month's Champions League final in Athens, accusing Reds fans of stealing tickets from their fellow supporters, charging the gates to get into the ground without tickets and causing trouble outside the stadium which ended with tear gas being used.
But Reds chief Parry believes UEFA's failure to heed the club's warnings about potential security and ticketing problems were to blame and felt they were now trying to pass the buck, having praised Liverpool fans before the final.
"The shortcomings in the management of the situation in Athens were apparent to anyone who was there," Parry told the club's official website www.liverpoolfc.tv.
"These latest comments from UEFA should not deflect attention from that reality. What is most surprising about the latest comments from Mr Gaillard is that on the eve of the final, he quite rightly commented that Liverpool supporters 'have a tradition of good behaviour'.
"Let's not forget that these same supporters who Mr Gaillard is claiming are now the worst in Europe were praised by UEFA president Michel Platini after our semi-final victory against Chelsea only last month, commended for their behaviour in Istanbul in 2005 and actually honoured by UEFA at a gala dinner in Monte Carlo in 2001 as joint Supporters of the Years with Alaves after the UEFA Cup final."
Richard Caborn, the British Sports Minister, who is meeting Platini on Tuesday, added: "I have a lot of sympathy with the Liverpool fans who paid their hard-earned money for genuine tickets but couldn't get into the ground.
"The reasons for this need an urgent explanation. We have already raised the matter with the Greek authorities through our embassy in Athens and Government officials are also talking with UEFA. I will be putting this issue high on the agenda at a meeting I am to have with Michel Platini."
Parry added: "To have a stadium with no counting system and no turnstiles is unforgivable for any standard of game, let alone a major final.
"We produced a report for UEFA a week beforehand predicting, sadly, all of the things that did go wrong. We told UEFA our intelligence suggested there were 5,000 forged tickets in existence.
"They knew and we knew that thousands of fans would travel without tickets and we stressed the need for a proper check at the outer cordon."
Liverpool's Lord Mayor Paul Clark has hit back at UEFA's claims in the Liverpool Daily Post.
He said: "UEFA appear to be trying to avoid the blame for the disorganisation of the final."
Cllr Clark, who attended the Athens match, added: "To make matters worse, instead of looking at their own faults UEFA are blaming the people of Liverpool.
"Saying this is typical of Liverpool fans is unfair and reflects badly on the image of the city."
Les Lawson, spokesman for the official LFC supporters' club, said: "This is typical of UEFA. Rather than look at their own shortcomings, they want to shove the blame somewhere else.
"The fact they are not willing to stand up and take responsibility is worrying for fans, because that means they will never learn from their mistakes."
UEFA spokesman William Gaillard had earlier said: "The incidents involving Liverpool fans have been well known to us before the trouble at the Champions League final which involved Liverpool fans last week.
"That was just the latest example. What other set of fans steal tickets from their fellow supporters or out of the hands of children?
"We know what happened in Athens, and Liverpool fans were the cause of most of the trouble there.
"There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and these are in the report - most teams' supporters do not cause any trouble at all."

Sun, 28 Jan 2007 - 20:56
By: Hatem Maher
Zamalek celebrated their African Champions League return with a thrashing 4-1 home win over Burundi's Vital'O in the first-leg of the competition's preliminary round on Sunday.Amr Zaki, Hazem Emam, Mostafa Gaafar and Tarek Al-Sayed were on the score sheet to help Zamalek, who didn't feature in last year's edition, edge closer to the Champions League round of 32.The return-leg will be played in Burundi on the 11th of February.Zamalek needed just three minutes to open the score line when Zaki cut ahead of the keeper to head home Ahmed Ghanem's inch-perfect cross from the right flank. The Egypt international striker almost doubled the lead in the 11th minute after he poked home from close range but the goal was ruled out for an alleged handball. Television replays showed that Zaki controlled the ball on his chest. Two minutes later, the prolific Zaki received Ghanem's cross at the far post and fired a powerful drive that cannoned off the crossbar.
Zamalek kept on dominating possession and threatened on several occasions while Vital'O failed to create any scoring opportunity.Emam extended the lead three minutes before the interval when he scored a rare header into the top corner of the net after being set-up by Al-Sayed's corner.Gaafar added the third three minutes past the hour mark after he converted Zaki's miscued shot into the back of the net from close range. In the 73rd minute, Emam sent a superb lob that was denied by the bar before being replaced by Youssef Hamdi amid standing ovation from the home crowd who enjoyed their favorite man's display.Al-Sayed put the icing on the cake shortly after when he raced down the left-flank before sending a cross which deflected off a defender and went into the back of the net. While Zamalek were celebrating their huge victory, a defensive mix-up resulted in the visitors' only goal seven minutes from time.PAOK snub Saudi offer for Azmi

Becks to play in America - Jan 11 2007
David Beckham is moving to America to play for Los Angeles Galaxy, he announced today. The former England captain will leave Real Madrid in June and play in the US’s Major League Soccer from August, in a £128 million five-year deal.Beckham said the decision to quit Spain had been "extremely difficult".The news will no doubt be welcomed by wife Victoria, who will be able to see a lot more of Hollywood mates such as Katie Holmes and J-Lo.Becks also has links with the celebrity-packed city, with a football academy in LA.He said in a statement: "This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons."After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year."I would like to thank the supporters and people of Madrid who have made my family and I feel so welcome in my time here, making this an extremely difficult decision to make."I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans."I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world’s most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own."
Ronaldo to Play for Ittihad: Club Source
Samir Al-Saadi, Arab News
JEDDAH, 10 January 2007 — Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad Club is getting one of the world’s most renowned soccer strikers, Brazilian superstar Ronaldo, according to a source close to the club’s management. However, Mansour Al-Balawi, Ittihad Club president, did not name Ronaldo yesterday as he made the announcement that the team would be getting a player of the caliber of Inter Milan striker Louis Figo, who was also recently recruited.Club sources confirmed that the new player is Ronaldo, who was recently put on Real Madrid’s transfer list because he did not lose weight during the holidays as he was told to do.As a result, he will be sweating off the kilos in the hot sun with the boys in yellow. The three-time Brazilian FIFA World Player of the Year will put on the yellow-and-black jersey on Sunday, said the source.Al-Balawi, who addressed a crowded press conference here, said the name of the player would be officially announced today at 5 p.m. via SMS through Jawal Al-Ittihad. “We owe that to our fans,†he said.“I am afraid I’ll shock everyone here if I reveal his name now,†he added, as hundreds of fans who attended the conference loudly cheered.Thirty-year-old Ronaldo was the youngest player to win the FIFA World Player of the Year. He won the award in 1996, and then again in 1997 and 2002.But despite his glory, which included helping Brazil win the World Cup in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, Ronaldo has been facing problems with Real Madrid’s Italian coach Fabio Capello for putting on weight.According to media reports, he was offered to AC Milan, but the Italians said: “Grazie but no grazie.â€Regarding the signing of Portuguese legend Figo, Al-Balawi refused to reveal how much was paid to Figo to wear the Al-Ittihad jersey. “I wish not to reveal the number because I want to use that as a leverage for future advertising contracts we might sign,†he said.He said Figo’s primary contract is for 18 months. He added that the contract states that the Portuguese star must pass a medical test before playing for Ittihad in July.Al-Balawi said that Figo would be an important asset for the club both on and off theThe club is entitled to all advertisement income as long as Figo wears the yellow jersey and 60 percent of advertisement income for any other contract.Regarding Itti-Barca academy, he said that the club has received the license from the municipality to build the academy that will be located in the north of Jeddah. He added that 10 more centers that shall serve the academy are to be built all over the city to attract talent.Raul denies Liverpool link
Real Madrid striker Raul has denied he is on the verge of leaving the club he joined as a boy to join Liverpool. Recent reports from Spain suggested that Rafa Benitez was ready to buy the 29-year-old out of the final three years of his contract and offer the Spaniard the same length deal at Anfield.Speaking on Real Madrid TV, however, Raul said: "The only thing I am concerned about is the club (Real Madrid). I am very happy and content and I will carry on working as I have always done with the hope of finishing (at Madrid)."With Real Madrid undergoing a complete overhaul, and manager Fabio Capello underling his desire to have seven players under 25 in his first eleven, speculation nevertheless continues that the out of favour Raul is secretly planning his exit.Raul has made it clear that he has no intention in leaving the club he joined as a schoolboy from rivals Atletico, but he would also prefer making a dignified exit rather than suffer the type of ignominy dealt out to David Beckham."When a team-mate goes it makes you sad," said Raul of Beckham, who has signed a five-year contract with MLS team LA Galaxy."David has been a great team-mate and a professional who has always given his best."As for me, I want to stay at the club but if I have to make a personal sacrifice for the good of the club, then so be it."Raul was in Real's starting line-up in Sunday's 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza but had to be replaced early on after picking up a minor injury. The player's agent, Gines Carvajal, recently made it clear that if Madrid lose their faith in the aging club captain then "I can place him in England without the slightest problem."Raul and Benitez enjoy a good relationship and the former Valencia coach was amongst the coaching staff at Real when the striker was making his breakthrough in the first team.Raul, who has scored a record 54 Champions League goals for Real, was a regular visitor to Anfield when his close friend, and former team-mate, Fernando Morientes played for the Reds.He is said to have been impressed by the professional structure of the Premiership club and the magnetism of the Kop faithful.
Meanwhile, Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry announced on the weekend that Benitez was very close to joining Real Madrid over the summer but decided to stay put on Merseyside and continue the revolution that he started."It was pretty serious and for Rafa it was clearly a temptation because Real Madrid is his club. He has been there as a player and as a coach," said Parry."It will always be an opportunity he will have to consider but we sat down for a few hours together and talked about the direction the club was taking."He believed in the direction we are taking and he believed in the way we are going about it. We are all passionate to win trophies and the one we would really love to win is the Premier League."Ahly vs somthing jet...1-0Ahly is #33 in the world! whoa!!!!AHLY VS MOAWLEEEN 5-1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walter Smith has been appointed manager of Rangers for a second time.He has quit his post as Scotland head coach to return to the job he gave up in 1998 and has signed a three-year contract. The Scottish Football Association have confirmed their intention to take legal action against Smith "for breach of contract" and against Rangers "for inducement to breach the contract".David Taylor, SFA chief executive said: "Walter's departure is a serious blow to the Scottish FA."He has done an excellent job for us and the Scottish national team. We are very disappointed that he has chosen to leave us at this critical time in our Euro 2008 qualification campaign."In a statement, the SFA said: "At a meeting on Wednesday morning with the chief executive of the Scottish FA, Walter Smith delivered a letter of resignation with immediate effect from his position as national coach of the Scotland team."No agreement has been reached with Mr Smith or Rangers Football Club on any compensation payment to be made for the early termination of his employment, which is in breach of his contract with the Scottish FA."Smith was Rangers executive chairman Sir David Murray's first choice for the position from the moment Paul Le Guen left the club by mutual agreement six days ago.The 58-year-old Glaswegian led Rangers to seven consecutive league titles before departing for a stint at Everton, which was much less successful. He had previously served as assistant boss at Ibrox under Graeme Souness.Smith brings Rangers legend Ally McCoist with him as his assistant, while Kenny McDowall has been recruited from Celtic and will serve as first-team coach.Almost nine years have passed since Smith left Rangers. With the current team in a state of turmoil, he will initially be tasked with stopping the rot rather than mounting an immediate challenge to Celtic in the Bank of Scotland Premier League.Smith enhanced his reputation with Scotland who surprisingly top their Euro 2008 qualifying group, ahead of Italy and France, the two World Cup finalists.Rangers announced they would present Smith at a press conference at 2.30pm.Despite the SFA's pledge to take legal action - they refused Smith permission to leave on Monday - Murray was delighted to land his number one target.Murray said: "It is a great pleasure to welcome Walter and Ally back to Rangers Football Club."I have great respect for both men and their achievements and I am convinced they will take the club forward."Murray told www.rangers.co.uk: "I would also like to extend a special welcome to Kenny. He has a terrific track record as a coach and will undoubtedly enhance our new management team."The new manager stated: "I am delighted to return to Rangers as manager. This club has always been in my blood and I can't wait to get started."I am looking forward to teaming up with Ally and Kenny. I worked side by side with Ally during our time with the national team and I am also delighted Kenny has agreed to join us at Ibrox."Smith paid a short visit to the SFA offices on Wednesday morning, when he delivered his resignation letter.Walter Smith Factfile 1948: Born February 24 and brought up in Carmyle in the east end of Glasgow.1966: Joins Dundee United initially as a part-time player and electrician before going on to make more than 250 appearances.1974: Plays in 3-0 Scottish Cup final defeat by Celtic. 44th min goal made directly into ahly goal and stoped by al hadary! yes amazing!2 attempted shots by al zamalak in a row and two very close saves for al ahly. zamalak seems to be getting fired up.
HALF TIME!Unfortun. i will not be covering the second half because i will be covering the match from a location that does not have wireless. I will update with the final score after the match is over. continue...
Beginning of the second half goal made for al zamalakthe rest of the second half was not a soccer match in any manner, it was a war on the field, with no skills at all present this was a boxing match, player going after player simply to injur the other with no intent on makin a shot the only player strictly focused on making a goal was Amr Zaky, who without a doubt was attempting to make up for the penelty shot he lost at the beginning of the match.towards the end of the second half there was a huge foul made on abou trieka which should have resulted in a penelty shot for al ahly but the ref. did not call even a foul, following it directly there was two more "penelty" shots for al ahly which were not called or made notice of.This bring me to another point , the ref. was not middle eastren he was either european or american, which was important so that he did not have prefrence on either side of the teams. In my whole futbol life i have never seen such a irresponsible ref. on the field. this man should be provoked of his ref. rights. Blind and stupid as well. He would call a penelty shot or foul or out of bounds every once and a while for either team simply to give off the "impression" that he is not being bias and that he is paying attention. Stupid ref. enough said. And finally the funniest part of the match, towards the end when a fould is called on al ahly for fouling a zamalak player. this goes to show that the ref. was simply calling out random fouls because if he was really watching he would see that the zamalak player cried out "ouch" before the ahly player has even touched him...again the second half was simply who can hurt who and random whistles. All in all everyone played lousy , worst match of the season. Ahly VS Immpy 2-1! First Half ahly makes a goal, second half immpy makes a goal. and Eslam il Shatir Ahly player gets kicked out by the ref. In about the 88th min Eslam (IMMPY PLAYER) slaps a ahly player in the face as he runs after the ball, the ref blows the whistle and pulls a yellow card out just as eslam curses him out! and quicker than the eye can see the ref pulls a red card out and eslam is out! Now up until the last two minutes it was a tie game between ahly and immpy until a shot was made by ahly but it wassss offside and did NOT count. With one minute left the ball is in flavios reach as he head buds the ball to emad mitab and IN THE GOAL IT GOES! and seconds later the whistle is blown and Ahly wins.Ahly Vs Harass il hadood 2-0
Mitab Mitab twice with goals passed from flavio lazy first half active second 4 yellow slips.
BARCELONA VS BRAZIL 0-1!!! WOWWW!
AHLY VS MEXICAN TEAM 2-1
What happened with Abou Treika was unprofessional and flat out stupid, you cannot remove a player from the top list after puting him on. BS.
Ahly vs Internacion 1-2! In my whole futbol history...this was the match of all matches. Period.
Internacional struggle past Al-AhlyWritten by: Michiel van Blommestein
TOKYO, Dec 13 (Sw) - Internacional has reached the final of the Club World Championship after beating Egypt's Al-Ahly 1-2. the Brazilians will now face either Barcelona or Mexico's America.Alexandre Pato opened the score for the Brazilians, with 17-year-old wonderkid striking in the 23rd minute. Angolan striker Flavio equalised in the second half with a header.Thing began to look worse for Internacional, when Pato was taken off with injury 20 minutes into the second half and replaced by Luiz Adriano. As if fate wanted it, it was Luiz Adriano who sealed the winner with a headed-in corner on 72 minutes."Brazil is the most advanced footballing country in the world," Ahly coach Jose Manuel told Reuters after the match. "You can't compare Brazilian football and Egyptian football."We showed character but we were a bit tactically naive."
AHLY VS ILGEISH 4-0!!! SECOND HALF WAS AMAZING!! ABOU TRIEKA AND FLAVIO THE STARS!
Ahly goes from Hero to zero
By Basma AbdelkaderAhly's hope to win a second successive Champions League title was severly crushed after their amazingly disappointing match on Sunday. The match was an indication that Al Ahly’s skills may need to be reexamined. On Sunday the 29th of October, Al Ahly played Tunisian team, Sfaxien. Missing an unbelievable number of chances, Ahly was barely able to tie by the end of the match. Besides achieving an almost record number of fouls, the match held over a total of eleven minutes in over time and still ended with a tie. A usual match has 10 fouls which is alarmingly little considering by the end of the first half there was already over 25 fouls!
Perhaps the most amazing part of the match was when Ahly player, Flavio, actually ran away from the ball, missing the opportunity to score a point in the first half. This came as surprising because all throughout the match positive feedback was given about the player by the sports casters. But respect to the team must be given at some point thanks to AbouTreika who was able to manage an amazing goal, putting Ahly ahead in the first twenty seven minutes followed by a shocking amount of red in the stands from the supporting fans and a double foul in the 44th minute as a Tunisian player gets carried off the field due to injury. In the second half things really spiced up. Within less than the first ten minutes Sfaxien came back harder than ever scoring a tap-in goal by player Joetex Frimpong's. Right away after Sfaxien made a goal, the teams effort was pushed up a notch and they played faster, harder, and better than before. Which is a positive point about them vs. Al Ahly, once a goal is made, the philosophy “thank god now we can relax†is held.
In the 69th minute Ahly player Kinawy was taken out and Eslam El-Shatir was brought in. Shortly after in the 80th minute Emad Mitab was taken out and Wael Reyad was in. An important thing to note is both goalie’s for both teams were remarkably awake and active throughout the whole game. Extensive credit must be given to both for their outstanding performance in managing to stop almost every goal.
Being International winger Mohamed Barakat’s first start for Ahly in this season's Champions League, it was most definitely discouraging for him as well as all fans considering the loss was on Egypt’s own land. Engineering freshman Tarek Allam gives his opinion on how he saw the match. “The Sfaxien coach, Mrad Mahjoub, out played Manuel Jose on the field.†For those of who didn’t watch the match, they were certainly affected by it in one way or another. Some 76000 fans, 1000 being Tunisian, packed the Cairo international Stadium on Sunday. What did that mean? If you were planning to get home on time, think again.
Ahly could have taken the lead as early as the eighth minute through a brilliant header from Emad Meteb but unfortunately, Ahly was only able to accomplish a tie. Sfaxien will enter the second league in Tunis after two weeks as favorites as they need any draw to be crowned African champions for the first time in history. Sfaxien coach Mrad Mahjoub couldn't have asked for more.COLUMN-Soccer-Is playing for country now an optional extra?
By Simon EvansMILAN, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Representing your country is routinely described as the greatest honour in a footballer's career but more players seem to be turning their backs on international teams, a trend which risks devaluing competition.
This weekend's Euro 2008 qualifiers will take place without several well-known players who have turned down call-ups, raising the question of whether international football has now become an 'optional extra' for top performers.
Italy coach Roberto Donadoni would love to have playmaker Francesco Totti lining up against Ukraine at his home ground, the Olympic stadium in Rome.
But although Totti is fit enough to be featuring for his club, he says he wants a break from the national team until 2007.Totti's decision has been taken with remarkable ease by Donadoni and the rest of Italian football. While the muted reaction may reflect the player's limited contribution to Italy's World Cup triumph, it surely also reflects a mood of resignation among most national coaches.Sweden coach Lars Lagerback is without one of his best players this weekend after striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic rejected a call-up.
Lagerback disciplined Ibrahimovic last month, sending him home along with defender Olof Mellberg and midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson for staying out too late ahead of the qualifier against Liechtenstein.Ibrahimovic believed the sanction was too harsh and decided not to respond to the call-up for Saturday's home game against Spain and the match in Iceland four days later.Netherlands coach Marco van Basten has also been unable to persuade Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mark van Bommel to play this weekend.DIDA RETIREMENTIn Brazil, Dida has retired from the national side despite being only 32, arguably the perfect age for a goalkeeper. What is notable in all these cases is there no longer appears to be anger or particular surprise when players reject an international call.
"I do not think I can persuade someone to play in the national side or, based on FIFA's rules, make them play," said Lagerback in a statement.Van Basten agreed, saying: "Van Bommel called me and made it clear he was no longer available. He was so determined that it was no use trying to persuade him."In one sense the coaches are right, there seems little point in enforcing call-ups on unwilling players."We don't want any player who doesn't want to represent Brazil, who doesn't have any pleasure in being here," said Brazil coach Dunga."The player has to put his heart and soul with the team as well as his body."France coach Raymond Domenech takes a different view.Domenech told Chelsea's Claude Makelele he must carry on playing for France even though the midfielder wanted to retire from the international stage.Under FIFA rules, if Makelele had refused to turn out for France he could have been suspended from playing for Chelsea.Domenech's determination to keep Makelele has resulted in a compromise, the player agreeing to stick with France until qualification is assured for Euro 2008.If Domenech's hardline approach pays off, other national coaches may follow suit and insist call-ups are heeded or suspensions imposed.
The Lagerback and van Basten attitude, while it has a certain logic and avoids club v country conflicts, could lead to the erosion of the status of national teams.
Sorry, The champions league was discontinued on coverage due to ME HAVING NO TIME BECAUSE I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO RUNS THIS THING. I will be covering other stories. Thank you:)Ok Guys I'm back. Heres the updates as far back as I can recall leaving off..
First let me start off with a article that I thought was very touching that I ran across...
Bayern coach celebrates end of 18-year Italian drought
By James Eve
MILAN, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich coach Felix
Magath celebrated a 2-0 victory over Inter Milan
on Wednesday which ended his club's 18-year run without a win in Italy.
Bayern's win, thanks to late goals by Peruvian striker
Claudio Pizarro and German international Lukas
Podolski, was their first in Italy since they
beat Inter in the third round of the UEFA Cup in
the 1988-89 season and left them top of Champions League group B on six points from two matches.
"It's a special win. I'm not the kind of person who sets
much store by statistics but tonight we've
broken our run of not winning in Italy and against a great team too," Magath said.
"This win has confirmed what I thought about the strength
of my team."Inter, meanwhile, were left languishing at the bottom of the group without a point.
Coach Roberto Mancini insisted that they could still
finish in the top two and qualify for the knockout phase of the competition.
"There are still four matches left and our chances of
qualification have not been compromised," he said.
"We've got enough time to finish second. We have to stay calm."
According to Mancini, the final score did not accurately reflect the match.
Inter had been marginally the better side until striker
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for a second
bookable offence in the 57th minute.
"It was already a fairly tough match - Bayern are a hard
enough to play with 11."So to have to play with 10 men for 20 or 30 minutes had a big impact on the rest of the match.
"Having said that, right up until the goal we were well in the match, creating chances.
"Two-nil is a misleading result. It's not as though Bayern had 50 shots on goal.
"Their goals came out of our lapses in concentration. Even
after Ibrahimovic's sending off it was a match
that we could have won".

Time enough for South Africa, architect saysBy Michael Atkins
BERLIN, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Work on three of South Africa's new stadiums for the 2010 soccer World Cup can be completed in three years, though such a tight timetable would not have been feasible in bureaucratic Germany, says a German architect involved in the project.Hubert Nienhoff, a leading Berlin architect who has helped to design stadiums for Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, said planning so late would have been impossible in highly regulated Germany but there was still enough time for South Africa."The decision to begin construction now is actually too late for us Germans," said Nienhoff, referring to his country's web of rules that give a wide range of agencies and the public the right to inspect and challenge any significant building project.Nienhoff said the renovation work on Germany's 12 World Cup stadiums for this year's finals had to be planned much further in advance to meet the strict requirements."By 1999, we were already planning for the Olympic Stadium. That's seven years before the event took place," he told journalists in Berlin recently.South Africa will also have a smaller budget than Germany for its World Cup, the first to be held in Africa. The South Africa organising committee has said that the total stadium costs will be about 6 billion rand ($858 million). Germany spent 1.5 billion euros ($1.92 billion) for building or upgrading its 12 stadiums.South Africa's budget covers the costs for 10 new and existing venues in nine host cities. The opening match and final have been set for Johannesburg's Soccer City, which will seat 104,000 after renovations.WIDESPREAD ACCLAIMNienhoff, a partner at Germany's leading Gerkan, Marg and Partner (GMP) architecture firm, said the three stadiums designed by his company would be finished a year ahead of time in 2009 and would be unlike any others in World Cup history."I'm extremely impressed with South Africa -- with the beautiful landscape as well as the people. Our partners there are very goal-oriented and determined," he said. The firm won widespread acclaim for its work on German World Cup stadiums in Cologne, Frankfurt and Berlin. It also designed Berlin's new, futuristic, glass-domed central train station."I think one could say the stadiums in Germany are state-of-the-art and they have set the latest standard," Nienhoff said.Nienhoff said GMP had been working closely with African artists and planners to ensure that the new stadiums reflected the region's culture.Of the three they have designed, the 85,000-seat King's Park Stadium in coastal Durban, a popular tourist destination, will be the largest. The three-tier Durban stadium will be patterned after the South African flag, with two overhead arches -- fused together at one end -- spanning the length of the arena.A "Skywalk" is planned for the arches and the building is designed to withstand strong winds off the nearby Indian Ocean."We feel fortunate to have got such a perfect location in Durban and it is important that the stadium stands out from the city skyline," Nienhoff said.TRANSPORT SYSTEMThe Durban stadium would belie fears of inadequate transport links, he said, with access to a motorway and a railway station.South African President Thabo Mbeki last month announced a three-billion-rand ($432-million) spending programme to upgrade the country's decrepit public transport system. In Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay Arena will be built near the North End Lake and will seat 40,000.The new arena in Cape Town will seat 70,000 and will have a retractable roof. It has already been earmarked to host one of the semi-finals.Local municipalities will pay 56 million euros for the new arena in Port Elizabeth and roughly 170 million euros each for the new projects in Cape Town and Durban.By comparison, GMP restorations to Berlin's Olympic Stadium, the site of this year's final, cost 250 million euros.Nienhoff said the new stadiums would be multi-functional and not soccer-specific, in accordance with South African officials' hopes of one day hosting other major sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games or Olympics.
CD Guadalajara 1, FC Barcelona 1
August 7, 2006LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Diego Martinez scored a late goal to give Mexico's CD Guadalajara a 1-1 tie with FC Barcelona on Sunday night in front of a sellout crowd of 92,650 at the Coliseum. The attendance is the largest ever for a soccer game in the United States involving a club team Martinez tied it in the 83rd minute. Martinez ran onto Adolfo Bautista's high pass and headed the ball from 8 yards between goalkeeper Ruben Martinez and the left post.Eidur Gudjohnsen gave FC Barcelona a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute. Ronaldinho passed quickly to Gudjohnsen, whose first shot hit the left post. But Gudjohnsen secured the rebound and converted from 7 yards.Ronaldinho, the two-time FIFA player of the year, entered the game in the 46th minute to a loud ovation accompanied by the popping of camera flashes in the stands.Among the other international stars who played Sunday night for Barcelona were Edmilson, Samuel Eto'o, Rafael Marquez, Carles Puyol, Mark Van Bommel and Giovani Van Bronckhorst.FC Barcelona, the defending Spanish and European champion, will continue its tour of the United States with a game against Mexico City's Club America on Wednesday in Houston.
