Hana was born in Czechoslovakia and has lived there until her late teenage years, after which she moved to the United States. In her home country she attended classical clarinet lessons at the direction of her parents but never found enough stimulus in practicing scales and etudes and was fascinated by those who were able to create music on the spot, as inspired, the zen concept. In College in South Carolina she mostly hung out with the musician crowd and was turned on to the tenor saxophone by a fellow musician from the Jazz Ensemble. With him she explored the concept of playing what you hear, vs. playing what you read, something she had never believed she could do. She got hooked. Life of pouring your soul out became a lot more fulfilling. In Charleston she listened and trained herself in jazz, drifting into Latin Jazz and the expression of Stan Getz remains her biggest inspiration. From other jazz musicians Hana identifies most closely with Sonny Rollins but admires the chops of John Coltrane. She also finds the emotional touch of Joshua Redman very moving, especially in his Mood Swing album. She is further inspired by Czech artists such Buty, Chinaski or Ivan Mladek. As an ardent dancer she loves electronica that combines live horn playing and her other role models are St. Germain or US3.Hana always pursued many different interests such as semi-professional athletics, dance, yoga, honors academics or travel to other countries, diverting herself from pursuing music at full speed though it remained the food for her soul. When studying temporarily back in Europe, she met fellow Eastern European musicians in her dorm in Graz, Austria and was convinced by them to take classes at the oldest jazz school in Europe. As the only female, she played second tenor in the Big Band and the second solo instrument in the jazz combo.A few years after graduating she made the move to New York, the place she had always dreamed to live in, having in mind the pursuit of music there, although not knowing how. But instead she discovered a new passion, tango, and started to get serious about dancing and took a trip to Buenos Aires. One day when out walking to her favorite live music spot she heard some live salsa music from a peculiarly named bar called Lava Gina and was curious to see who this band was. During the intermission she discovered that Mambo NYC was looking for a sax player..An offer to play more world/reggae music with Meta and the Cornerstones was extended, followed by performances with house DJs. The next step for Hana is to compose her own music and grow further through the sharing of ideas with other musicians and music lovers.
