About Me
Merion"Joei" Powers is the essence of the cliche, "Looks are deceiving."Looking at him, you could never accurately guess his age or anything else. You won't have an inkling that this man is the owner of a prosperous recording studio, and a connoisseur of only the latest and greatest gear available. When he shops, even the most objective salesperson would never suspect that this bandana-wearing-gang-leader-looking, gentleman just might make her week. Likewise, his L'AMOUR RECORDING STUDIO, secretly tucked away in one of Detroit's residential areas, is definitely NOT your typical "project" studio. Recording everything from demos, commercials and CD's, to full scale projects for national release and now mastering, Mr. Powers and his L'AMOUR STUDIO emerge through the smoke screen as truly, "impressive."

Detroit-born musician, engineer, sound technician and studio owner, Mr. Powers is truly a musical "renaissance man." His musical roots took shape in St. Paul, Minnesota where he was raised, educated and was part of the original Flyte Time Band. From nine years old, Powers displayed an undeniable interest in music and things electronic. As a boy he was always taking things apart and then putting them back together with modifications. Friendly enough on the surface, a closer inspection reveals that "Joei" is an individual with little time for small talk or social entanglements. Instead he is a working machine in the studio, filling his days and nights with endless hours of studio work and other music related labors. His reclusive manner is quickly eclipsed by his ability to get the job done and consistently please his ever expanding clientele. He says, "The workload's pretty heavy, but it's always better to have work than to be sitting around complaining that you don't have work." He adds, "I just like to keep the quality of my work at a professional level all the time Starting several bands and participating in a musical gang-type rivalry in the 70's with Prince (when 'the artist' was still known as Prince), as part of Flyte Time along with Terry Lewis of the now mega-famous Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis production empire. From there, Powers went on to what was to be one of his favorite experiences: as lead guitarist for R&B recording star, Alexander O'Neal. Powers toured the world with the celebrated O'Neal during 6 years of his 8-year reign at the top of the R&B charts worldwide. Powers was not only O'Neal's lead guitarist, but also sound engineer, production manager and acting road manager. It was during this time that he says he learned a lot, "Including all the bad things that could happen in one day," he adds, "It made me a veteran, a Navy Seal of the music industry."
