Previous Red Shift Productions

The company was founded in 1982 by its current Artistic Director, Jonathan Holloway, and a theatre designer, Charlotte Humpston. Both were concerned to make a space for a form of theatre which drew on European influences to marry traditional narrative and character based drama with art-house performance which employs design, image and spectacle.
The result was to bring accessible story-based theatre characterized by innovative and unusual use of the actors' physicality and the manipulation of designed objects to a broad audience throughout the country. The company has achieved this and maintained a thorough-going commitment to presenting its work in the most modest spaces including rural communities and inner city venues not frequented by the mainstream theatregoer.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies.
Teeming with testosterone fuelled self-possessed youths, fumbling clowns and serious men of ‘business’, this production also emphasises the raw meat of a text infused with humiliation, revenge and brutality.
Red Shift’s excursions into the classic repertoire have won awards internationally, and are always eagerly anticipated.
Set in the excoriating moral vacuum of the Balkans in the early 1990s, a palpable atmosphere of suspicion and casual violence hangs in the air.
Stalked by danger, two loving relationships splutter into life – one youthful and impetuous, the other mature, cynical and guarded – the courses of which are perverted and brought to the brink of disaster by the machinations of two ruthless brothers.
Expect an evening of challenging theatre, unexpected shocks and laughter, respect for the text and outrageous liberties in equal measure. This is an exciting ensemble entertainment that works for Shakespeare enthusiasts and newcomers alike. br
