About Me
Formed 1983 in Denmark by Peter Zichau (keyb.), Alex Zichau (vo), Gorm Johnsen (g). The music was very rough and fast new romantic, the keyboard being the main instrument. In 1984, Michael Brown (dr) joined, but the debut concert in April 1985 was played without him. At this time PD had made contact with HUB Records and through HUB, PD went on a mini tour in Jutland November 1985 as support for the Danish punk rock band Kalashnikov. At the end of ‘85, Thomas Rolsted (dr) replaced Brown and in January 1986, PD supported Sort Sol, the most well-known Danish punk band. With Rolsted as the drummer, PD’s style developed into a very evocative and melodic, yet violent pop music, played at a tremendous speed without guitar solos, but a lot of catchy guitar riffs and almost entire melodies played on the keyboard bass.
After having played a lot of concerts in Copenhagen throughout ‘86 and ‘87, PD played their final concert with Rolsted as a drummer in Germany ‘88 touring with another band, On Trial. Søren Pilegaard Hansen replaced Rolsted in 1988.
In 1992, Josefine Holmsteen (g) was the new guitarist, but in January 1997 Christoffer Eriksen replaced her. The basic members of the band were still Zichau, Zichau, and Pilegaard, though.
The music is written by Peter Zichau and the lyrics by Alex Zichau. The lyrics are about 50 % of the the concept of the band and in particular the usually very controversial, provoking, and quite subtle lyrics make PD different from other so-called underground bands. Peril Dance has made hundreds of songs, and lots of the songs are made using a drum machine rather than live drums.
Peril Dance very rarely play live concerts, but once a year at least, the latest live performance being in December 2005 in Christianshavns metro station in Copenhagen. The music is inspired by the early Simple Minds, Bauhaus, Velvet Underground, Suicide, and Joy Division, but PD doesn’t sound like any of the above, and they're hard to classify. Søren Pilegaard Hansen is involved in lots of different projects; he plays the bass and keyboards in other bands, and Christoffer Eriksen plays the guitar and is the lead singer of Metric Noise and Heartbreak Basement.
Lars Bjerre, songwriter and guitarist of the well-known Danish underground band, Alive with Worms was PD's guitarist for a short while in 1999, but since 2003, PD has been primarily a duo, consisting of the brothers Zichau.
The debut 'released' was recorded in 2004 in Medley Studio, Copenhagen.
Since 2005, Alex Zichau has worked mostly alone on the solo project A Strange Divide, occasionally joined by Christoffer Eriksen and Iver Ask Overgaard (My Beloved). The songs on this site'Empty Head' and 'Nothing' is A Strange Divide - not Peril Dance. The videos (filmed, cut, and performed by Alex Zichau) 'Nearly Always' and 'My Kingdom' are Peril Dance, however. For more Peril Dance songs, please visit www.garageband.com
