BELLY-FLOPS

The BELLYFLOPS storie is short and quick to tell (ah, not really!), because it all startet in a small town called ODENSE, which is on a very small island in a tiny country called DENMARK.The year was early 1990, when RUDI met JAN and ESPEN, doing some rather interesting Karaoke in a local pub: they turned old Animals, Beatles and Elvis classics into Punk versions, while jumping like crazy around on stage. RUDI immediately saw the talent in them and grabbed the 2 guys: “We have to form a band!”The 3 guys joined up with drummer PETER and so the BELLYFLOPS have been born. The first show came up only a few weeks later, where they dressed up like girls and played covers from 80s pop acts like ABBA, BLONDIE, BONEY M. & KIM WILDE (amoung others).This early formation recorded then their 1. demotape with mostly their own material in the summer of ’91, just to split up a few months later. The redicolous reasons at tje time have been: former bassplayer ESPEN joined the Queens lifeguard, drummer PETER had to walk his dog, gutarist RUDI went a ½ year to Australia and singer JAN found a girlfriend.In ‘92 the Band re-united, but went through several bass-players, before the right guy was found. In the meantime they wrote new songs, played a few shows and later released a new 8 track demotape.Then in ’93 everything changed when bassplayer THOMAS joined the band. The most of the old songs were abandend and plenty of new material has been written, which turned out to be much more advanced, quick and heavy. When PETER realised, that his drumming skills weren’t up to the job, he quitt the band and gave so space for new member: SOEREN.With this new line-up, the band improved their song-writing and changed their style dramaticly, away from that naiv poppy-punk to more grunge, heavy and hardcore. Their live-shows remained awesome: They still dressed up in silly costumes, while playing their set in twice the speed. They even managed to perform rather nicely, when totally pissed on stage. This gave them quick the title as “most entertaining band Denmark’s”.After a years time they put out a new 12 track demo “yesterdays trash” and just short time after a 6 track demo “todays garbage”. Like always recorded in their own rehearsal-room on a cheap 4 track recorder (The spirit of Punkrock!).A second guitarist was introduced in ’95, to make the sound even more powerfull. But OLE stayed only for a years time and left the band just a few days after the release of their final demotape “don’t wanna change”, which was recorded in a professional studio and turned out really great.So they used all the songs for their homemade video-clips, which actually had been broadcasted on German & Danish televison. The 2 mayor tours: “a world of conflics tour ’94” & “what a wonderful world tour ‘95” saw them playing around SCANDINAVIA and nothern parts of GERMANY.They turned down several record-deals to stay independend, so they kept playing for a warm meal and a carton of beer. Then in ’96 every-thing turned to crap when some of the members started to foundate families and others moved to the danish capital of Copenhagen, so the band finally split up for good …
