About Me

Caitlin currently lives on the upper western side of the isle of Manhattan, in a census tract that contains more people than the entire city of her birth and upbringing: Fairbanks, Alaska. It took years living squished together with ornery city-dwellers who don't know what a thermarest is for Caitlin to truly appreciate her wonderful parents and the lucky upbringing she had in that most beautiful and unforgiving place.Caitlin doesn't ever do her hair correctly and has three dwarf siberian hamsters named Faucet, Water, and Spoon. Caitlin speaks a bit of Russian but as of yet cannot adequately communicate with the hamsters, who run all night in their wheels and keep her awake.Sometimes Caitlin goes to her classes at Columbia University, where she is getting a masters degree in Urban Planning. She prefers secretly taking classes in other disciplines like Engineering, Biology, or Anthropology without telling the administration. Before she came to these numbered streets, Caitlin lived in the less navigable city of Boston, where she got some bachelors degrees in anthropology and classical violin after attending Boston University on a full music scholarship. To be able to pay money for the privilege of living with the rats and the cockroaches, Caitlin also worked at many low-paying jobs involving lattes, rich people, croissants, and an inordinate number of crying children (as well as a couple good apples). After Boston but before New York, Caitlin took to the water on two boats. The first had thirteen sails, two masts, and many nets with which to collect biomass used for hazing purposes when crossing the equator in the South Pacific. The second had engines and bottom trawlers from which many sea-aliens were garnered each midnight while slaloming down the Aleutian Islands looking for baby fur seals, bioluminescent plankton, birds with any fat on them at all, and in general, signs of the impending doom of our fisheries and oceans resulting from our own perilous behavior.Caitlin has no words to describe New York City. Mostly, you can hear her explaining how she feels about things through the sounds that escape her violin in traditional Irish music sessions, or less traditional other kinds of sessions, most nights of the week. The best friends she has ever been fortunate enough to know play music with her, and sometimes if she can drag them, go on other crazy adventures involving mountains, ghosts, kayaks, skis, canoes, beavers, boob trees, tent sessions, burned potatoes, naked cliff jumping, abandoned tunnel exploring, and other questionable escapades. If she is awake during daylight hours, she works two jobs making GIS maps and doing spatial data analysis.Frisbees and air compressors scare Caitlin with their inherent power, but she loves grapes, cheese, fuzzy animals, red wine, down sleeping bags, and the windy silence after being dropped off by supercub, alone on a ridge in Alaska.
