In most cases, you know that you’re playing with a full deck when you have four aces counted. But, as the story goes, there is an exception to every rule, and in this instance a full deck is made up of only three. For this is the case of the blues, and Teddy Young and The Aces are proud to lead the way. A warning to listeners, however, “This is not your grandfather’s blues.â€
Teddy Young has been tearing up the local and regional music scene for the past 12 years. Most recently and for nearly half his playing career, Young worked his magic with The Young Guns Blues Band. The hard hitting power trio, featured the raw antics and excellence of Young with his guitar. After a five and a half year stint, however, it seemed the Young Gun got older and found that his band needed to grow up a bit, too. With the departure of long time drummer, Al Parham, the time was right to set the wheels in motion.
When the deal goes down, these Aces give listeners a great mix of down home blues, soulful swing, classic rock and serious funk. Many numbers are well-known classics performed with an original twist, Also found in the mix are the band’s original grooves which will make any serious music fan move.
Some of the songs found in their rotation include selections from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Always making a statement when playing tunes once performed by his own heroes, Young reincarnates the spirit of these two great players whenever he nails such blues guitar rock classics as “Purple Haze, “Hey Joe,†“Pride and Joy,†and “Texas Flood.†Also sticking to the roots of blues, you’ll find songs once known to Jimmy Reed, buddy Guy and B.B King. On the funk side look for some James Brown, bob Marley and a few of the Aces own original grooves. If the sounds of classic rock are what you crave, they’ll be happy to serve up some Santana or even Clapton upon request. Despite one’s own musical taste, this band presents a mixed bag that will satisfy even the fussiest of music critics. There is something here for everyone.
