I am a Chicago musician, artist, healer and teacher living in a mysterious and absurd kingdom. In a sense, I consider myself to be in a state of self-imposed exile from the kingdom of Bush. I am on a bizarrely and nearly infinitely extended sabbatical in my hometown. Will I ever get out?Here, I teach English and lecture on cross-cultural issues, study the traditional music and culture, and import beautiful and unusual artisanal items to the United States and Europe. These include just about anything you can imagine coming from Morocco, but carpets, jewelry and leather are heavily featured. Photos will be posted here soon.I feel that it is really important for Americans who disagree with the way that the U.S. is being governed to make meaningful contact with people from other countries and cultures, particularly in the Arabo-Muslim world, the site of such grave conflict and misunderstanding. By connecting with these 'strangers' as human beings, we can change our own perceptions as we change the world's perceptions of the 'Americans' incrementally.Anyone interested in corresponding with students here is welcome to drop a line. These students are eager for an American penpal in order to practice their English and exchange viewpoints and information. It is also a work of expansion and rectification to engage in this dialogue. My students ask me all the time, 'What do Americans think?' I always tell them that they need to ask some Americans individually, since American culture is so vast and non-homogenous that each will answer their questions differently. Currently, their image is fixed by generalisations in the mass media, Al-Jazeera, etc.; just as the American perception of people here is heavily influenced by the super-spun images of American mass media, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc.So, write me and tell me what you're interested in!
