Sounds Like: Zero Child/Play Loud n Fuzzy: Basement Blues
Filed under: Uncategorized — leftofthedialmag @ 1:52 pmBob Urh, himself a god-child of Steppenwolf, Roky Erickson, and the Cavern Club, presents these soldiers of raucous rock in all their various line-ups. Finally getting the official release Zero Child deserves, the ever-changing band combines meteoric hot tons of fuzz-mayhem with factories full of raw riffage. Perhaps you’ll like the stripped down shiny Au Go Go boot snottiness of “Wild Child,†sung by bass player Tara McMunn, which comes forged from the same combustible material that infused L.A. girl rock, from the Pandoras to L7. It’s fierce and free-spirited, and the canon fire tom tom work alone should pummel your ears. The intro to “Eye Poppin†veers close to the drum damage of the Cramps (“TV Eyeâ€) and the Stooges (“1969â€), unveiling yard after yard of trash rock ruckus. “She’s the Girl†is battered blues, a Detroit mishmash of heavy, heavy psychedelic pounding, without the acid grins and Age of Aquarias lining. Instead, this song mulches and mows down such hippie nostalgia, in Blue Cheer fashion. The real gem of the record is the ambitious “Suckcess,†both a cynical and celebratory stab at New York excess, rolled out in New York Dolls inspired speedy, boogie-based twist and turns, with a kind of Swedish rock (The Hellacopters) musical gymnastics thrown in, plus there’s even a saxophone bleeding thru here and there. The grinding “Lizard Love†shakes with garage abandon, dirty and delirious, with just the right crescendos and pauses, as Urh dips into orgiastic territory. Ride the helter skelter carpet ride. “Chicken Bones†could be back-alley, sloppy, New Orleans fried mess rock, played with deep howls echoing the likes of Laughing Hyenas.
(more…)A groovy, mutant kind of shimmy sham gets ugly and murky on “Mexican Boogie,†which comes replete with a Bo Diddley gone mad drum beat. The almost scary “Alone,†a gutteral, wasted, titanic slab, feels funky just long enough (like early 1970s Funkadelic) in the middle sections to offer some breathing room from the crushing loneliness and hallucinatory edge. “Angel†returns to the punkified Bo Diddley temptation, and the saxophone offers up more demented Psychedelic Furs ghosts. “Demon Child†is by far the straight shooter in the set: as an evocation of the urban jungle, it shines with ease and thrift, offering a sped-up Cult-like leather pant longing and bright lights bad-ass city switchblade poetry. To end, they unfurl the (at times) languorous, trippy, cavernous, Black Sabbathy “Your Hole,†which gets pumped-up and sick at the same time during choruses. Again, it is harrowing, otherworldy, and driven to the borders of musical mischief. At a time when the rest of the country was tweaked on Riot Grrrl, Alt Rock, post-hardcore, indie posturing, and country crooning, this meld of eras, signature styles, and homegrown fuzz seems utterly out-of-place in a New York teeming with now forgotten bands like the Goons, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, and the Trick Babys. Still, this proves that out of time, out of place is indeed the better universe.“An irresistible mix, guaranteed to blow your mind . . . No fake impressions here, just pure rock and roll.â€

THE MUSCLE CAR SHOUTOUTZERO CHILD "LIVE IN MEXICO CITY 2002" CDr
Zero Child is band with Bob Urh and Tara McMunn from Ultra 5. It's psych garage rock and roll, but it's really hard to write about the band from just listening to their live recordings.
I would like to hear their normal recordings, I understood from their web site they have 25 recorded tracks that are not released yet. The titles sound really cool, specially "BIKER BITCH" and "21ST CENTURY PUNK" that are not on this CD. So I really hope to hear these some day.ZERO CHILD "TEMPTATION DEMO" CDr, 2003
This sounds better than the live CD they sent last time. Much much better. As I said - you sometimes loose lot of power because of live recording. Zero Child play pretty good raw bluesy garage rock. There is a flame of 80s garage bands burning in there, but also something that reminds me of bands like Giant Sand, Green On Red...NO BRAINS ZINE,2004“raw garage punkâ€
