STAFF:
The 2008-2009 Stephen F. Austin Cheerleading Coaches:
Trisha O'Connor and Scott Holland
~ Trisha O'Connor is a 2005 Stephen F. Austin graduate with a BS in Psychology as well as in Child/Family Development. Graduating from Kennedale High School in Kennedale, Texas in 1999, Trisha attended and cheered for the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals from 1999-2001, winning her first collegiate national title in 2001. She transferred to SFA, where she was a member of the Large Coed Cheerleading Squad for four years, winning three consecutive national team titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005. After graduation, Trisha returned to SFA as the assistant coach for the Large Coed Squad, and was also soon named head coach of the All-Girl Team. The 2006 Large Coed Squad, under the direction of Head Coach Brad Patterson and Assistant Coach Trisha O’Connor, went on to win their 4th successive national title in 2006, while the All-Girl Squad also competed well and turned out a 9th place finish under the direction of Trisha. For the 2006-2007 season, Trisha returned as SFA Spirit Coordinator and Head Coach for the Large and Small Coed Cheerleading Squads, with Assistant Coach Doug Daigle. The Large Coed Cheerleading Squad, under the direction of Trisha and Doug finished in 2nd place at the NCA National Collegiate, while the Small Coed Squad took 9th. Shortly after the national competition, however, the SFA Lumberjacks (large coed) were named national champions as the result of a disqualification. For the 2007-2008 season, Trisha will returned to SFA as Spirit Coordinator and Head Cheerleading Coach for both the Large and Small Cheerleading Squads, joined by another SFA Cheer Alumni, Scott Holland, as Assistant Coach. The Large Coed Cheerleading Squad, under the direction of Trisha and Scott amde an amazing comeback at the NCA National Competition in 2008, finishing in 1st place after a rough prelims perfomance sent them into the final competition in 4th. The Small Coed Squad, participating in the largest division at the NCA Competition placed 9th.
~ Scott Holland is a 1996 graduate of Arlington High School in Arlington, Texas. Scott attended and cheered for the Midwestern State Indians from 1996-1997. He then transferred to Trinity Valley Community College where he cheered for the Cardinals from 1998-1999. From TVCC, he transferred to SFA, where he was a member of the Large Coed Cheerleading Squad and was part of the team that won SFA's first and only Grand National Championship title in 2000. He spent 2002 in Florida competing with the Florida Atlantic University Owls. In 2003, Scott returned to Nacogdoches to help coach the SFA All-Girl Squad for two years before moving to Kansas, where he coached for Barton County Community College. He spent two years as Barton's Assistant Coach and one as the Head Coach. For the 2007-2008 season, Scott to SFA returned as the Assistant Coach for the Large and Small Coed Cheerleading Squads, and will continue to be a very important part of that program for the 2008-2009 season.
~ The coaching style of Trisha and Scott, as has always been the style at SFA, is more laid back than some other programs. The athletes are expected to practice hard and maintain the highest of skill and performance levels, but they are also given the chance to have fun and gain many great experiences with cheerleading and in the community. Cheerleaders for SFA are expected to not only be the best, but also to have the work ethic that will get them there. Free stunting and tumbling days and even out-of-practice practices are offered to any of the squad members, and any recruits, that want to take advantage of it. The squad members of both the SFA Cheer Squads have an abundance of knowledge about cheerleading, whether it be stunting, tumbling, baskets, or pyramids, that continue to make the SFA Cheer Program one of the best programs in the nation.
