We Need Leads

About Me

We Need Leads like a lot of bands came together as friends at senior school and unlike many bands are just happy playing music and having fun. The band formed in the autumn of 2006 and in a very short space of time has created a significant fan base, and are attracting interest from all corners of the world via the wonderful world of the intranet. An example of this increased media coverage can be witnessed in the bands appearance in episode 2 of the second season of Skins, which will be broadcast on Channel 4 in early part of 2008.The band are from Merseyside and have a unique sound, lyrics and on stage presence that is unusual in today’s copycat indie industry. Of course the band does have some influences and these are across the whole music genre with special interests in the work of Kings of Leon, The Beatles, The Specials, ABBA, Oasis, The Libertines, Larrikin Love, Jamiroquai, and The Smiths.
The band members are Pete Constantine (Lead Guitar/vocals), Sy Dixon (Bass), Joe Wooder (Guitar) Louis Gamble Beresford (Drums). In addition to this the band members will continually try new instruments and different approaches to get that different sound that will hopefully attract new fans and increase the existing fan base. The band are energetic, loud and boisterous and their songs reflect living and coping in the world today, with particular emphasis on the moods and feelings of today’s teenagers. The band members are currently undertaking university education and are planning to record some new songs in the next 6 months. In the early months of the bands formation they have appeared at many charity events and have generally played for fun and enjoyment. Some of the more serious gigs have been played at Merseyside’s Cavern Club and the Carling Academy.

Essential listening: Welcome To Big School (EP, 2007)
If the UK were to have a fast, upcoming act reviving a punk/ska sound not too unlike The Clash like New Zealand have with with Calamity Jam, then Liverpool’s We Need Leads would be the winners. While their sound will draw comparisons obviously to the Sheffield sound of 2006, it’s the raw energy of the group which endears them to everyone - including the producers of E4’s dramedy “Skins”, who snapped them up to appear in the second season of the cult show.
We Need Leads strong points, aside from some tight dance floor churning guitar work, is it’s sentiments - rather than adopt the tried, tested and sometimes testing angst most young bands adopt to complain about surroundings, We Need Leads instead provide an almost shy-like pessimism in their lyrics almost like someone who doesn’t wish to moan finally caving in. Indeed, their song Riki Tiki Tavi is the equivalent of the post-traumatic complaints we would of traded in our youth - starting of gentling unhappy about the surroundings and proclaiming that while it was once fun when younger, it’s become ‘darker’ since growing up. Very much verbatim how youngster can act going on those ‘uncool-now-I-am-teenage’ Butlins or caravan holidays to the UK.
Expect everyone to champion this band once they’ve taking to the screen and gathered an army of followers post-Skins. For many of us though, the championing starts now - embrace gentle teenage disenchantment to ska elements.
