The Jason Plumlee Sideshow
I try to provide a complete acoustic musical sampling in my live shows, from The Allman Brothers Band, Bad Company, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Lynyrd Skynyrd, & Steve Miller Band, to Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, & Willie Nelson, to Elton John, John Cougar Mellencamp, Prince, & Violent Femmes, to John Hiatt, John Prine & Todd Snider. And, I toss in a few of my own songs for good measure.
Check out my blog for a more extensive list of artists and songs.
The majority of songs that I cover are out of admiration. Some are to get toes tapping, others are to get a laugh, and a few are just for kicks to make people say "I didn’t expect that song, but damn, it’s a good one". During all of this mess, I hope the audience hears a bunch of songs they know and want to sing along with, and others that catch them completely by surprise. In the end, I want the crowd (or the two guys at the bar, the bouncer and the wait staff) to have a great experience.
History:
Music has been a huge part of my life from an early age. But, I did not start playing guitar until I was in college, back around 1991. My friend Andy Adams not only sold me my first guitar (for $20), he also taught me a few guitar chords. A week or so later, a painful rendition of "Every Rose Has It’s Thorn" could be heard from the basement. Hey, I wish it could have been a Bob Dylan or a Beatles song, but we can’t rewrite history, now can we?
The next stage was getting together with my friend Chris Fancler to play guitar. After he taught me a few more chords, we would hang out and play for any group of drunks that would listen, whether it was at a house, campfire, tailgate, or field. To quote a few intoxicated partygoers, we sounded "just like ’em, no man, I mean it, juuuust like ’em".
In 1997, I moved to Kansas City. From time to time, I would drive back to the Northwest Arkansas Area and sit in with Andy’s band, Wattsit2ya. Over the years, Andy, Mike, Don, Stan, and Brian were all brave enough to let me on the stage, dealing with my stray words, stray chords, and the occasional stray side kick from a 250 pound man.
By 2000 or so, I was in a band called Union Jack in Kansas City. We had some great times practicing, and had a fun set list. Unfortunately, not long after we started getting gigs, the band imploded.
In 2003, Andy Adams (guitar), Brian Watt (bass), and I (drums) formed the band SouthPAW. The goal was to create original music. We did and we had a blast doing it. After a while, we realized that my "AN-I-MAL" drumming wasn’t quite what we needed, so we recruited Mike Hudson on drums. In 2005, I moved to Springdale, AR. We played around the Northwest Arkansas Area for a couple of years. October 14th, 2006 marked the death of SouthPAW (RIP). Band implosion number two.
So, in October 2006, under the assumption that I would neither quit, nor kick myself out of my own solo project, I decided to form The Jason Plumlee Sideshow. One man, one guitar, and hopefully one hell of a good time.
