Born in the year 1666, day and month unknown…………..Birthplace – Scotland
I spent my child hood till the age of 13 (1679) with a circus traveling the lands of Scotland and England, where I practiced and honed my skills in magic, escapes, ropes, acrobatics, and knife throwing.
1679 - While in the seaport of Cardiff England, performing in a local tavern, I was befriended by a group of unscrupulous adventurers. I was put to the test of self-defense utilizing all of my skills. A sailor twice my age and size attacks me over a disagreement on the outcome of a game of chance. My new friends take me aboard a ship bound for the waters of the Caribbean, thus begins my new way of life.
. Pirate era of William Mayhem.
1680 I was involved in the attack on port Caracas with Thomas Paine & Captain Wright.
1681- 86 - I sailed with Chevalier De Grammont, harassing the English fleets. De Grammont’s ship was now ported in a small village called Saint Augustine, working under a letter of marque from the Spanish Governor of the village.
1686 – I was involved in a scuffle that caused me to miss being aboard De Grammont’s ship departing from St Augustine, but as fate would have it, the ship was lost in a terrible storm with all hands, including De Grammont himself.
1686 – 99 - I left the world as a privateer and took over control of a Tavern, whereabouts secret and unknown, south of St Augustine on the intercoastal water way. The Tavern I renamed the Manor of Mayhem, became a safe haven and was known for the games of chance, the lively times, and the generous stock of alcohols from across the world. This stock was obtained as payment from the many privateers who graced the establishment, who mysteriously, could never seem to win at any of the games of chance I provided.
It was during this time that I also took ships in payment for the debts that were owed by
many a Privateering Captain. I amassed a fleet of 13 ships, which I used to maintain control over and protect my many clients and acquaintances from the British, Spanish, French and other unfriendly Navies, who were always on the lookout for privateers to put before the executor.
1700 – 08 - I grew restless for the sea and began to venture out with some of my ships to take advantage of the many ships sailing the coast of the new Americas. I was gaining a reputation as a pirate. I needed to clear my name. I set sail to the southern waters of Florida, leaving the Spanish city of Saint Augustine behind.
1708 - I soon joined forces with Woodes Rogers and became a protector of the British ships running of the waters of the Bahamas. I soon became a pirate To the Spanish. But to the British I was earning my rite as a loyal citizen thus reclaiming my Scottish heritage as I was pardoned for my previous actions against the crown. Be advised not all members of the crown agreed with this decision.
1717 - I was having a discourse with the ways of Woodes Rogers and decided to take over his ships and crew. I set sail back to the Americas, passing Saint Augustine, heading further north to the Carolinas. This is where I met Edward Teach, known as Black Beard. I joined him. In a fierce battle with the English trying to over take Blackbeards operation I sailed away after sustaining several wounds and damage to my ship and crew. I sailed south to a remote dock in Florida, but Blackbeard remained and fought off the coast of the Carolinas where in 1718 he is killed in battle.
I returned to my Manor south of the city of St Augustine in the Wilderness of the Coastal waters and lived a somewhat quiet life, providing gambling, alcohol, and lively times to both Pirate and traveler alike. Life was simple for me then. I was hidden from most of my enemies. Or at least this is what I thought. I was soon to find out that I was not safe.
1724 - It was shortly after the sun had set during the spring of that year, when I heard a report of musket fire just a short distance from the Tavern. I stepped out to see what the disturbance was, when 7 English soldiers appeared and after a brief scuffle they bested me, and threw me in irons. I was surprised at this attack, but it seemed The English were raiding Saint Augustine and wanted to take it over for themselves. I was now a prisoner of war.
I was week from the struggle with the English soldiers and my old wounds were flaring up. I can see my life is about to come to an end. I knew this was true, for while in a dank prison cell, I over heard the Guards and their Captain. The word was out the I was wanted dead. The Captain of the guards had been giving a tip about who I was from another he had tortured earlier and he recognized my name. It was sure now that I was going to be hung in the morning as a pirate. During the night, utilizing old skills from my younger days, I managed an escape, vanishing into the swamps of Florida and disappearing from the history of the glory days of privateering forever.
