Big Pokey grew up in Houston's Third Ward. He is a graduate of Jack Yates High School and Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. An athlete, Big Pokey played football in high school and college. He was part of district and national championship teams, respectively. Big Pokey has transferred that excellence on the field to excellence in his craft. Recently, the owner of a well known major label said if he had to name one rapper from Houston with star potential, it would be Big Pokey.
Big Pokey's life experience is not typical of most rappers. He did not pass through the "school of hard knocks" before getting serious about life. "I've really been blessed and I'm thankful for that." Big Pokey credits his Mother's unconditional love and no-nonsense approach to life. His father died when he was 10 years old but Pokey also had the support of loving grandparents and his sister, 17 years his senior.
Houston's rap scene is alive and well and Big Pokey is a prominent player. "It's all about H-Town," says Big Pokey. "It's our time to shine and we are going to represent our home to the fullest."
Big Pokey's first two projects, The Hardest Pit in the Litter and Da' Game 2000, experienced successful regional releases. Both CDs were in Houston's Top 10 and sold 80,000 plus copies each with limited availability in retail stores. With hypnotic grooves and Pokey's ability to draw vivid portraits with his lyrics, no wonder fans keep coming back for more. This is not Pokey's first rapping experience. He was a member of the famous Screwed Up Click and knew DJ Screw for many years prior to his death. Other Click members included Li'l KeKe, K.K., Hawk, Mike D and Fat Pat. The Click dropped verses on several of Screw's tapes.
Seeking to exercise more control over managing and planning his career, Big Pokey formed MobStyle Inc., in early spring, 2001. By August 2001, MobStyle and Big Pokey were signed with Wreckshop Records.
As a founding member of the Screwed Up Click, an elite group of Houston based rappers who were discovered by Robert Earl (Dj Screw) Davis Big Pokey free-styled on countless of Screw's legendary mixed tapes. Big Pokey is a vital part of Houston’s thriving underground. His reputation for being the hardest Pit in the litter and a dog on the mic has made him one of the most popular independent recording artists in the Deep South. In addition to several of the region’s most successful independent underground albums. When it comes to recording features and hooks, Big Pokey is one of Texas’ most sought after artists. In fact according to many of the artist he has worked with, a Big Pokey feature can garner a major or independent artist as many as 20,000 additional sales in Houston alone.
KOCH Records is happy to announce the addition of yet another Houston legend to its burgeoning hip-hop roster. Houston rapper Big Pokey will release his new album, Evacuation Notice, on KOCH Records on August 19, 2008.
The album includes the street anthems "Boss Hogg On Candy" ft/ Slim Thug and "U Can Hate" ft/ Chris Ward & Slim Thug, as well as features from Lil Keke and Paul Wall. Evacuation Notice is the prequel to Pokey's next KOCH Records release, Hurricane Sensei, due later this year.
Big Pokey hooked up with DJ Screw in the early '90s and started dropping rhymes on the DJ's many mixtapes. His first full-length album, Hardest Pit in the Litter, appeared in late 1999 and ended up being one of the better underground hip hop albums to come out of the South that year. Big Pokey returned a year later with D-Game 2000, another album of mid-tempo 808-driven beats featuring several of his Houston peers as guests. In 2001 he collaborated with the Wreckshop Wolfpack for Tha Collabo.
Pokey has recorded with a who's-who of southern rap icons including Slim Thug, Z-Ro, Big Hawk, Big Moe, Lil' Flip, Lil' Keke, and Chamillionaire. In 2005, he was featured on "Sittin'S Sidewayz" by Paul Wall which reached 93 on Billboard Top 100.
