About Me
Kate Kennedy is a singer-songwriter and musician from Des Moines who currently resides in Ames, IA. She began performing publicly in Ames at the Boheme in 2004 and soon launched a solo career playing original songs and folk standards around central Iowa. In 2006 she released "Circle, Spiral, Line" on the Barely Bias label. The album is an 11 song collection of original songs, with Kate accompanying herself on flute, accordion and piano. From 2006 to 2009, Kate has played numerous solo shows as well performing in local bands on guitar, alto saxaphone, clarinet, accordion and bass.In late 2008, Kate began recording her second album of original songs. The album is due for release in spring of 2009 under the new band name Pennyhawk. Kate is accompanied in the band, and on the album, by vocalist and songwriter Tessa Bean and horn player Nate Logsdon. In June of 2009, Kate will travel with Tessa and Nate in support of the new album.Kate is intimately involved with the Ames music scene and has played in bands, ensembles and jams with dozens of Ames musicians, including Andy Mitchell, Joe Terry, Adam Hawkins, Isaac Norman, Adrian Power, Holly Figueroa, Kai Tanaka, Michael Martin, Quyen Nguyen and many more. She and her partner Nate run the local music venue Ames Progressive, which has hosted many local, regional and nationally touring acts.Over the past five years, Kate has been honored to share the stage with acts such as Jolie Holland, David Dondero, Poison Control Center, Caspar and the Cookies, Mr. Baber's Neighbors, Midwest Dilemma, It's True, Brad Hoshaw, Theodore, Kaiser Cartel, David Thomas Broughton, Corinna Repp, The Bellows and many, many more.
