Olive Grooves

About Me

Olive Grooves is a regular benefit night to raise funds and awareness for projects in Bethlehem and Palestine. We work with local bands and artists, DJs, peace activists and other promoters to provide a unique night with quality entertainment.

Following a trip to Bethlehem in 2005, members of Bangor Peace Group began fundraising to establish an olive grove as an act of solidarity between North Wales and Palestine. Since then over £3,200 has been raised, resulting in 316 trees planted around Bethlehem in February '07. 4 whole groves were sponsored, with trees also being planted in 31 other sites around the city. The support and solidarity this has shown to Palestinian farmers and families is immesurable.
Olive Grooves was set up to do more than just raise money for this project - the night seeks to share information on the situation in the Occupied Territories as well as promoting local music and providing a unique club night.

All profits from Olive Grooves nights are pledged to the YMCA in East Jerusalem for the "Olive Tree Campaign", please visit http://www.jai-pal.org to learn more of the campaign and other inspiring work.

A big shout out to all who have helped to make Olive Grooves such a success: Byd Mawr, Hendre Hall, Bangor Peace Group and all the volunteers who help out with publicity, working on the door and providing gallons of fairtrade Chai. We love you all.

Special thanks to the artists who have been part of this journey so far: Valleum, Gwylim Morus, the Cane Toads, Mazungu, David Rovics, the Screaming Citizens, Bamana, Nathan Ball, Mooi, Emma Black, Belle, the Amphibian Monks and the mighty Red Stripe. Thanks also to the DJs: flyffilyfbwbl, Stevie Bear, N-Rich & Jimi Ffondu (Byd Mawr), Kid Ciamacco, Bandersnatch, Da Jester, K-Lang, Sine and VJ El Campino.

The Olive Grooves project is co-ordinated by DJ Hippy Ad with the help of many supportive and lovely people. Special thanks go to: Helen & Stacey, Rhona Wyer, Ian Cuthbertson, Roj from SNOG, James from Hendre, John Gregory, flyffilyfbwbl, Stevie Bear Al Blastland (PA) and Mike Viney (Lights). And a special mention to the East Jerusalem YMCA (big love to Baha!) and the Bangor community currently living and working within the segregation wall.
Influences: The people of Palestine who still fight for peace despite everyday oppression which the Western world can barely imagine. Peace activists who are willing to stand up for the truth despte the opposition. And anyone who goes out of their way to make the world a better place. Together we can make a difference...
