About Me

None of the following is true:Joe or Wàn Hù is a minor Chinese official of the Ming dynasty and perhaps (though not likely) the world's first astronaut.According to legend, early in the 16th century, Joe decided to take advantage of China's advanced rocket and fireworks technology to launch himself into outer space. He had a chair built with forty-seven rockets attached. On the day of lift-off, Joe, splendidly attired, climbed into his rocket chair and forty seven servants lit the fuses and then hastily ran for cover. There was a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared, Joe and the chair were gone.He was never seen again.NASA named the Wan-Hoo crater of the Moon after him.

My Interests

Psychological egoism is the view that humans are always motivated by self-interest, even in what seem to be acts of altruism. It can be contrasted both with ethical egoism, which is the view that the individual always ought to be motivated by self-interest and disregard the interests of the community, and rational egoism, which asserts that the rational thing to do in all situations is that which furthers the actor's interests the most. Psychological egoism is controversial, since many see it as an over-simplified interpretation of behavior, and it cannot rule out altruism without being contradicted by evidence. Rather, it claims that when sane people choose to help others, it is because of the personal benefits they themselves obtain or expect to obtain, directly or indirectly, from doing so.The most prominent form of psychological egoism is psychological hedonism, the view that the ultimate motive for all voluntary human action is the desire to experience pleasure or to avoid pain. Many of the discussions of psychological egoism focus on this variety, as does this entry, for the sake of simplicity. The two are not the same, however: one can hold that all actions are ultimately motivated by considerations of self-interest, without thinking that all agents conceive of their self-interest in terms of feelings of pleasure and pain. A possible (though controversial) example of somebody holding such a view would be Aristotle, who asserts that the ultimate aim of all actions is the agent's eudaimonia, or happiness, but who denies that all people think that happiness consists solely in pleasure and the absence of pain.

I'd like to meet:

Let A be a set with a partial order ..leq, and let x and y be two elements in A. An element z of A is the meet (or greatest lower bound or infimum) of x and y, if the following two conditions are satisfied:1. z ..leq x and z ..leq y (i.e., z is a lower bound of x and y); and 2. for any w in A, such that w ..leq x and w ..leq y, we have w ..leq z (i.e., z is greater than any other lower bound of x and y).If there is a meet of x and y, then indeed it is unique, since if both z and z' are greatest lower bounds of x and y, then z ..leq z' ..leq z, whence indeed z = z'..,. If the meet does exist, it is denoted x ..land y. Some pairs of elements in A may lack a meet, either since they have no lower bound at all, or since none of their lower bounds is greater than all the others. If all pairs of elements have meets, then indeed the meet is a binary operation on A, and it is easy to see that this operation fulfils the following three conditions: For any elements x, y, and z in A,a. x ..land y = y ..land x (commutativity), b. x ..land (y ..land z) =(x ..land y) ..land z (associativity), and c. x ..land x = x (idempotency).
