Katamanto Highlife

About Me

Katamanto Highlife Orchestra was founded in 1986 by guitar player Frank Bøgestrøm and saxophonist Jesper Holm.
Katamanto Highlife Orchestra consists of 10 musicians 2 Ghanains and 8 Danish who are all deeply involved in the West African music scene in Scandinavia.
Katamanto Highlife Orchestra gets the true highlife feeling from the two Ghanaian members of the group: lead singer Desmond Appiah Boateng who enthuses with his authentic and typical African voice backed up by charismatic Sellasi Dewornu’s sparkling percussion.
Well, the listeners know and therefore Katamanto Highlife Orchestra gathers a faithful audience at their well-visited concerts at concert halls, festivals and at cultural events all over Denmark and Sweden. The orchestra has also successfully toured in Ghana playing larger concerts as well as at funerals and weddings.
In the summer of 2004 the orchestra released their new CD ‘Katamanto Highlife Orchestra’ which has been nominated to ‘Audience’s Prize’ and ‘Album of The Year’ at Danish World Awards 2004.
Katamanto Highlife Orchestra participated twice in the international world music congress WOMEX 2004/2005.
Katamanto are now mixing the 2. Album to be released summer 2008.
So if you want to experience ‘highlife’ – this is your opportunity …

Influences: For those who have never heard of ’highlife’ – the music first appeared in Ghana in the 1920’s, amongst people meeting in clubs drinking palm wine and dancing all night long.
Since the 1920’s the music style has developed and elements of reggae, funk and jazz were added without ever loosing the unique African character traits: extrovert and happy dance music focusing on a joint energy expression.
We're inspired by great Ghanaian highlife legend such as A.B.Crentsil, Eric Agyemang, Dr. K. Gyasi, Koo Nimo, Ralph Kakari, Jewel Ackah, C.K. Mann and Nana Kwame Ampadu 1.
Your inspiration is still alive!!!
Sounds Like: Sunshine, freedom, no more trouble.....
