When everything comes down to the wire, a brotherhood will stand strong and fight until the last man standing. In the history of music, it is not often that you come across a truly close-knit group of musicians. Hip-hop afficianados, take notice. In the same vein as Public Enemy comes 97211 , a fierce hip-hop crew made up of some of the best talent that Northeast Portland has to offer.
Three individuals make up this dynamic group: Shoty Zulu, Smoove-T, and Chuck Cheezy. Without a doubt, they are all talented artists in their own right, but as a collective they are unbreakable. Born Natey Ayaribil, Terrance Griffin, and Charles Paschel respectively, 97211 brings a classic style of hip-hop to the game. Their unique sound was born and sharpened through the eighties and nineties, a time when hip-hop culture began to grow and flourish in the public eye. "A man is a direct product of his environment," observes Ayaribil, commenting on how his city has shaped his life as well as his music.
Shoty Zulu and Chuck Cheezy are both Portland natives, and even though Smoove-T was born in Cleveland, he is fully acclimated to the flavor of the northwest. 97211's extensive presence in Oregon give them a cohesive sound that has not gone unnoticed. Their undeniable energy attracted the attention of the Portland label Liquid Assets Recordz ; 97211 is now set to release their label debut in association with Liquid Assets, coming summer 2008.
Before beginning their careers as musicians, the boys from 97211 held down a number of different occupations. Shoty and Smoove-T were full-fledged black entrepeneurs and dedicated students of the hustle, while Chuck kept the money flowing by cutting hair at a number of local establishments. By the time the new millenium rolled around, all three had decided it was time to take up their mics as a full time endeavor. "I started writing music to elevate my mind and test my skills," Shoty relates. Smoove-T laughs, "I just started 'cause I'm tight."
"My hip-hop is for the love of Portland," shares Cheezy while the other two nod in agreement. "We are inspired by anyone from our town who is serious, motivated, and wants to take their music career to the next level." Without question, 97211 has deep roots in their city. Their city gives the love back as well; the crew has had their music played on local stations like K-BOO 90.7 and Jammin' 95.5. Their most well-known single to date is "Wiggle Jiggle", a catchy club banger that echoes many a classic jam. When the 97211 boys drop "Wiggle Jiggle" on an audience, big bootys are guaranteed to shake and bounce.
97211 have extensively toured Portland and the surrounding area, making appearances at such notable nightclubs as The Vintage, The Greek, Taboo, Rock & Roll Pizza, The Bliss, and many more. The boys have played for crowds of over 1,500 people, and have never failed to rock a show to the very best of their ability. They have even opened for superstars like Too Short, Yukmouth, and Mr. Fab, just to name a few. "Our music is for everybody who likes to party," says Smoove-T. "It's straight up club music."
Liquid Assets Recordz and 97211 are entrenched in the studio, hard at work on the Portland group's upcoming album. Their debut will feature production and appearances from a number of national and local artists, among them E-40, Keak Da Sneak, Syko, Bosko, Cool Nutz, Lake-P, Chillest Illest, Rob Bangerz, and more. The album is a veritable who's who guest list from the great city of Portland. "If you're going to do it, do it big," says the group. "The first time we will blow your mind. Shout out to Larry, Berry, and Kari!"
This summer, get prepared for the masters of the "Wiggle Jiggle" to hit your own town. 97211 and Liquid Assets are gearing up to bring you the very best of sounds from the northwest. Ground breaking hip-hop and funky breaks will make you move. And that's a promise from Portland.
