Vange Leonel

Vange Leonel was born in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, on May 4th, 1963. In the 80’s she played in two of São Paulo’s post punk bands. In the queer alternative band Fix-Pá, she played bass, keyboards, sang, and composed. It was however, as a vocalist and composer for the rock band Nau, that Vange achieved some notoriety. In 1985, Nau took part in an LP called “Não São Paulo II/Not São Paulo II”, released by the independent label Baratos Afins, with two songs; “Sofro/I suffer” and “Madame Oráculo/Lady Oracle” (in 2005, Soul Jazz Records, released the compilation “The Sexual Life of the Savages” in both Europe and the United States, featuring the best of São Paulo post-punk, including the Nau track “Madame Oráculo”). In 1986, Nau signed with the major label CBS, and released the LP entitled “Nau”, never to be released on CD. That same year, journalist Cilmara Bedaque began writing songs for the band, together with Vange.
After the break up of Nau in 1989, Vange Leonel embarked upon a solo career while continuing to compose with Cilmara. The work of the duo, which had a more Pop and electronic sound, resulted in the CD entitled “Vange” (Sony Music), which was released in 1991. The disc was produced by Nando Reis and Charles Gavin (of the Titãs), both of whom played on the recording; Nando on bass and guitar, and Charles on the drums, joining Vange’s keyboards and vocals. The singer reached the top of the Brazilian charts with the track “Noite Preta/Black Night”, the opening theme of the Globo television network series “Vamp”. For this album, she received the Sharp award as best new singer.
In 1993, Vange and Cilmara broke their contract with Sony and launched the independent label Medusa Records with the CD release “Vermelho/Red” (1995). The singer then came out publicly as lesbian, and reconnected with the GLBTT movement (in 1981 she had already worked with LF - the Lesbian Feminist group). At that point, tired of showbiz, Vange decided to dedicate herself to her writing. In 1997, she began to write as a columnist for lesbian readers of the magazine Sui Generis and for the website Mix Brasil. Writing thus became the primary activity of Vange Leonel, who quit her work as a professional musician. She wrote both theater pieces (“As Sereias da Rive Gauche/The Mermaids of the Left Bank” in 2001, and “Joana Evangelista” in 2006) and books (“Grrrls - Garotas Iradas” in 2001, “As Sereias da Rive Gauche” in 2003 and “Balada para as Meninas Perdidas/The Lost Girls’ Party” in 2003), all lesbian themed. Since 2001, she writes as a GLS columnist for Revista da Folha, of the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, and works with other publications as well. In 2005, she began to write for the gay “G Magazine” as well. Once in a while she makes guest appearances singing along with friends’ bands, so as not to miss the stage quite so much.

Vange Leonel nasceu na cidade de São Paulo, Brasil, no dia 4 de maio de 1963. Na década de 80 participou de duas bandas do pós punk paulista. No queer e alternativo Fix-Pá atuou como baixista, tecladista, vocalista e compositora. Mas foi como vocalista e compositora da banda de rock Nau que Vange se tornou mais conhecida. Em 1985 o Nau participou do LP “Não São Paulo II” pelo selo independente Baratos Afins com as músicas “Sofro” e “Madame Oráculo” (em 2005 a Soul Jazz Records lançou a coletânea “The Sexual Life of the Savages” na Europa e Estados Unidos apresentando o melhor do pós-punk paulista com a faixa “Madame Oráculo” do Nau). Em 1986 o Nau assinou com a major CBS e lançou o LP “Nau”, jamais relançado em CD. Neste mesmo ano, a jornalista Cilmara Bedaque passou a escrever músicas em parceria com Vange para a banda.
Após a separação do Nau em 1989, Vange Leonel partiu para a carreira solo, mas continuou a compor em parceria com Cilmara. O trabalho da dupla, mais pop e eletrônico, resultou no CD “Vange” (Sony Music) lançado em 1991. O CD foi produzido por Nando Reis e Charles Gavin (da banda Titãs) que também tocaram violão, baixo (Nando) e bateria (Charles) juntando-se aos teclados e vocais de Vange. Com este CD a cantora alcançou os primeiros lugares nas paradas do Brasil emplacando a música “Noite Preta”, tema de abertura da novela “Vamp” da Rede Globo. Por este CD recebeu o prêmio Sharp como cantora revelação.
Em 1993, Vange e Cilmara romperam com a Sony e criaram o selo independente Medusa Records lançando o CD “Vermelho” (1995). Foi nesta época que a cantora assumiu publicamente sua homossexualidade e voltou a colaborar com o ativismo GLBTT (em 1981 já havia integrado o LF, grupo Lésbico Feminista). A esta altura, cansada do showbiz, Vange resolveu se dedicar à carreira literária. Em 1997 começou a escrever colunas para o público lésbico na revista Sui Generis e no site Mix Brasil. A partir daí a escrita se tornou a principal atividade de Vange Leonel, que deixou de trabalhar profissionalmente com música. Escreveu peças de teatro (“As Sereias da Rive Gauche” em 2001 e “Joana Evangelista” em 2006) e livros (“Grrrls- Garotas Iradas” em 2001, “As Sereias da Rive Gauche” em 2003 e “Balada para as Meninas Perdidas” em 2003), todos com temática lésbica. Desde 2001 assina a coluna GLS na Revista da Folha, encarte dominical do jornal Folha de S.Paulo e colabora em outras publicações. Em 2005 passou a escrever também para a revista gay G Magazine. De vez em quando participa como convidada em shows de amigos, só para matar as saudades do palco.
