Two bluesmen or the dream of rock stars

“Since when does your band exist?” This is a question that is often posed to us, however, neither we can answer nor do we place value to it. As you will see, the indetermination of dating the band foundation is only one example that we attribute to fortune. At any time in this biography we will personalize the respective band manning as “we”, although at the beginning it was a kind of a jam group. All members and ex-members are or have been a part of California Coach, so they all should be mentioned.
Back to the year 2001. It was the shared enthusiasm on Guns n’ Roses that brought Dave and Flo to pick up a mean western and a sleazy Les Paul replica and so we put ourselves the bee in the bonnet, that in a while, we could found our own goddamned rock n’ roll band.
We had other young musicians in our circle of friends, some of them played rock guitar pretty good, what we think, so our motivation was very high and it has been also our shared taste of music and bands that weld us - Dave and Flo – together.

The first jam sessions or the “Child-In-Time”-affair

In only one year we improved our skills and expanded our collection of guitars so that we started regular jam sessions with our friends Phil and Ludwig. Whereas Phil played keyboard for many years, you could compare Ludwig’s technical ability on his bass guitar with the six-string control from Dave or Flo. From that point of view nowadays we could say these jam sessions forced our abilities so much, we learned much more by improvising and listening to each other than by studying scales and going to guitar lessons. One song that is worth mentioning is Child in Time by Deep Purple which was played many times, supported by the skirl of Flo’s voice and drum performances by Phil’s Dad Joe.

The first gig or the beginning game of engaging and firing

At the end of the school 2003 year we did our first gig under the name “California Coach” with Phil on Drums (not Keyboard) and Mosi, also a friend of us on guitar. We simply called our band “California Coach” out of practical reasons: If the band should go on, it needed a band bus. We don’t even own the VW California Coach now (it’s still under the property of Flo’s parents), but that stupid little story gave us the name California Coach.
We still were looking for a drummer so we tried a few sessions with Detz, still a pretty good drummer-boy, but it didn’t really work. Then we separated from Mosi, but the core still went on. In this time a few songs like “Hope” developed in the blank shape and we finally found our actual drummer Rupert. Rupert was very talented young drummer, liked milk but rapidly learned drinking and having party. The band seemed completed, though we had to break up with Ludwig because of musical interests. Our new man on the bass guitar from now on was Lukas. He could fit in the band quite shortly, we really appreciate that we found him. We did numerous shows and wrote a lot of songs and made first experiences with recording our first album “Rock n’ Roll Ranch” which in effect never really was released.

Raisin’ the Speed Blues or the endless ride of the Blues Train

Up to that point of our musical producing we could say that we did a kind of style mishmash, a little bit of rock, metal, funk or reggae. After we broke up with Phil, it was much easier for us to develop our own style, pursue the same purposes and make sure our music acts authentic to the audience and our fans. You could say we found destination in writing songs, riffs and vocals. Out of any reason the idea and synonym of our style “Speed Blues” became more and more important. The impact on “Speed Blues” was for the most part old school rock, always influenced by strong blues elements, fast drum parts, driven by a loaded rhythm section, often sophisticated, sometimes virtuosic guitar parts and soli, lyrics you can follow and sing along and a an impressive singing.
The same thing happened with our unofficial band name “Calico”, but that was, we think, mostly driven by our fans. Constitutive on this points we wrote some very important songs for us, we tested them in shows and polished them back in our rehearsal room. Since the last year we recorded them in self-production and mix it, we only dare to give it away for Mastering and CD Pressing. We hope that we can present the album – it will be called “Blues Train” – within a short time to you! It’s about time to rock!
