The people who donate and recieve organs and tissues are not statistics or medical stories. They are everyone we know, everyone we love, and at any moment, they could be any one of us. This was created to help educate the world about organ and tissue donation. Each day, about 74 people receive organ transplants. However, 19 people die each day waiting for transplants that can’t take place because of the shortage of donated organs. The number of people requiring a life-saving transplant continues to rise faster than the number of available donors. Approximately 300 new transplant candidates are added to the waiting list each month. Almost 200 children died awaiting an organ transplant in 2004. Kidneys are in the highest demand and comprise nearly two-thirds of the waiting list. Of the more than 27,000 organ transplants occurring in 2004, nearly three-fourths came from deceased donors. Every 13 minutes, a new name is added to the national waiting list. On average, 17 men, women and children die each day because too few organs are available.
