The band was originally found by Will Torrey who had just moved to Helsinki from across the pond and wanted to form a group that would (not actually) sound like Tool and elderly Metallica (at all). After many months of searching, awkward meetings with gonna-be-members and finding a rehearsing-place, this torso of a band was first called Serene. At this point, band's other guitarist Olli was in the army and so the situation was something like this: Will and Lauri had started to write songs and Petri joined in when any practice took place. During the spring a new bassist, Jukka, came to assist after the first one had found a better-suiting band for himself (a thrash metal group called Northworld).
The whole summer passed and the band hardly ever got the time to practice together excluding the jam-sessions that these three huge men (Petri, Jukka & Lauri) had while learning the first five songs. In August 2005 they were practically lacking a vocalist, for Will's interests had gone in other directions. But since he would not be without a band (he had then joined a hard-rock group called Sans human), there was no hostility nor bitterness in any part when the band finally decided that he had to go. As Olli came back during the autumn, the band had then found a new promising singer, Jonna, changed its name to Caughtumn, and begun its course into reclusion, in order to create something fresh. During the year 2006 they recorded two demos, first ("Irrelevant pieces") in January, and the second ("Other parts") in August.
The next year, 2007, Juha joined the band as the new guitarist, and also caught'em another Lauri who soon found his place behind the drums. At this point Lauri (Kumpulainen) was the only remaining member from the original combo, but it finally seemed that these pieces fit together somehow.
After the third demo-EP called "Trapped in the distance" was released in early 2008, Jonna decided that she should leave the band. She suggested that it would be easier to replace her with a new singer than to wait things to work out on their own. However, this would not happen: The band saw that things didn't progress naturally any longer, so this should be the end of Caughtumn-era as it is.
