Akaga, one of the most popular bands in Bulgaria, are back on the club circuit. Formed by students from the National Music Academy in 1990, the band quickly became known as the creators of an exciting new modern Bulgarian sound.Airport, from their first album Broken Dreams, was welcomed with great success, becoming the best-selling single of the year.To cap off this extremely successful debut, Akaga won Best New Group of The Year from Rhythm magazine. Akaga held more than 1500 concerts across Bulgaria, Macedonia,Turkey,Austria,Switzerland,Finland,Sweden,Russia and most of ex- Soviet republics.The band play mainly original jazz-rock and fusion compositions, with a healthy dose of cover versions of artists like TOTO, Credence Clearwater Revival, Mezzoforte, David Sanborne.Akaga..s album Why documented their evolution, incorporating both traditional Bulgarian folk and a younger, more modern techno style. The successive one LIVE was recorded after their original co-writer, drums and percussion player, Kristian Alexandrov, left the band.Compositions on their new album combine folk motifs as well as drum..n..bass, hip-hop, raga, soul and fusion beats. An earlier album, When You Are Looking, showed their taste for combining ethno, reggae and soul.
