In the mid-eighties Ulrica Byrne a.k.a. Illspree, who grew up in Sweden. was introduced to reggae music by her Irish father, John Byrne. It was 1- love at the first sound! "Good memories" she says "He used to dance with me and my brother Patrick while singing along to Linton Kwesi Johnson's tune: England is a bitch-there's no escaping it".She began importing 45s and 12 inches from Jamaica and London and as her collection grew so did her passion for singing, writing and performing her own material. At the age of fourteen she recorded her first demo using a dub version by Mad Professor, her brothers guitar amp and delay pedal with a set of headphones serving as a microphone. Illspree is now a truly unique and refined reggae singer with an incredible voice and heavy lyrics. Out of frustration and compassion she address mental issues and spiritual solutions that concern and effect us all. Illspree come across as an innovator because of how shes able to blend street ruggedness with true awareness. She fuses her wicked sing-jay style and influences together into her own immediate recognizable sound. Her charisma and vibrant presence open up hearts as she encourages her audience to look inward for true freedom and salvation by leaving fear behind and short-term highs and pleasures alone. She express the celebration of life with all its imperfections and shortcomings. Taking aim at the veils of illusion and obscurations of delusions that distort the perception of reality, Illspree's sharp style has an immediate radical effect. Her analytical lyrics are full of gratitude to the most High for life alone. She carries a message that is truly needed and relevant in a time when the snare of mental slavery can take subtle forms: Find out who you are and honor your truth, and all things shall fall in to place. Illspree offers an uplifting, refreshing and self-empowering alternative to the reggae/ dancehall scene of today.
