Mobile Fire-Rescue Department was organized in 1888 as a fully paid department. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is a fully career department providing fire, HAZMAT, ALS Emergency Medical Service, Technical Rescue and Fire Prevention to the residents and visitors of the City of Mobile and surrounding communities. Mobile Fire-Rescue is located in the City of Mobile on the Gulf Coast of the State of Alabama. Mobile Fire-Rescue covers over 210 Square Miles plus a 3-mile public Safety Jurisdiction and covers the entire County for HAZMAT and Technical Rescue. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department also provides coverage for the Port of Mobile. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department has over 500 employees and is home to Alabama Task Force 1 Urban, Search and Rescue Team (USAR).Emergency Calls • The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Communications Division received 26,978 emergency calls in 2005. 3,279 fire related calls, 16,694 Emergency Medical Service calls, and 829 other calls. • It takes less than 60 seconds between the time you call 911 and the time the fire alarm rings in the fire station. • It takes only 4-6 minutes to respond to a call in the City of Mobile, and only 6-8 minutes to reach most sites in the legal jurisdiction. • The Enhanced 911 system helps the Fire-Rescue and Police Departments trace, and rapidly apprehend, anyone calling in false alarms. Fire Fighting • Mobile has approximately 462 firefighters and firemedics serving 244,376 people in it's 3-mile Public Safety Jurisdiction covering over 210 square miles. • Mobile operates 19 fire stations, including the two airports, staffed around-the-clock, every day of the year. • The department has 17 engine companies, 5 ladder trucks, 9 rescue/ambulances, 1 hazardous material response unit, 1 technical rescue response unit, 1 air cascade unit, 1 fire boat, 1 water tanker, and 2 brush trucks plus a variety of other specialty vehicles.Specialized Services All uniformed personnel are trained in fire suppression and basic emergency medical care. Specialized services include: paramedics, high angled and confined space rescue, extrication from motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material responses, fire prevention, public education, and fire investigation.Emergency Medical: The department has 9 Advanced Life Support ambulances that, in 2005, responded to approximately 17,000 calls to provide advanced life support measures to a wide range of medical emergencies such as: childbirth, heart attack, stroke, breathing difficulties, and all forms of trauma related injuries.High Angle/Confined Space Rescue: Some firefighters are trained to rescue people from high buildings and other difficult areas, such as trenches or cave-ins. These same firefighter/firemedics also serve on the departments USAR Team.Hazardous Material Response: Approximately 24 firefighters have volunteered to be on the Haz-Mat Response Team. They are trained to respond to all chemical or hazardous substance incidents throughout the entire county. They have an average response of 50-55 incidents per year.The Mission of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is to identify and respond to community needs in order to deliver an effective and efficient system of services which minimize risk to life, health, and property from fire, trauma, acute illness, and hazardous conditions.Find out more at www.cityofmobile.org/fire
