About Me

A new project from the Moscow-based Second Hand Band, virtuosos of trip hop, lounge and ambient, is their compilation Lunateka (Citadel Records). Produced by the band, it features works by its members, including their solo and side projects, and by other artists with similar vision. Each of the four SHB musicians has had their own projects since the band’s inception, making them equal creative players, and comprising with other kindred spirits a community of 12 artists presented on Lunateka. Here, they keep improving themselves in polystylistics, only formally segregated into trip hop, chill out, dub, ambient, hip hop, lounge, click-and-cut, and post rock on the CD cover, while creating a highly integrated album. Its 16 tracks, paced in medium tempo from 80 t? 100 bpm, are marked by a state of harmonic consonance with the world – contrary to how one feels amidst a hectic, high-paced urban life.Any disharmonious sounds were dismissed, to create a finely-tuned, richly layered and refreshingly original “soundtrack for internal use.” “Music for dreamers” was primarily composed at night, and is recommended for listening in the moonlight. Yet, unlike the image of the dark celestial moon overshadowing the sun in Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon,” Lunateka leans on its bright side. Its light illumines the path in wavy modulations of a magic Chinese violin coupled with the Russian violin of Dr.Tikoff in the album’s potential hit “Silver China Moon.” And the recitative in the closing track “Wind from the sun,” made in “sci-fi ambient” style, states that the effect of the Sun on the Earth is thousand times more powerful than that of the Moon. The Second Hand Band defines the overall style of their compositions as “cinematic trip hop and dub” – speaking to the fact that nearly half of the tracks have been used or written for movies or the theater. This testifies to their mastery in creating visual images with their music, some of them visualized in clips by VJ Raduga included in the CD. The psychedelic “Blaze,” made in an animation technique, was used in a play. The transparent, multi-instrumental “Mellow kiss” was composed for a TV series, and the opening “Amor” was compiled in click&cut technique from sound fragments and jams recordings as a soundtrack for an animated film. The players perfectly balances the organic and synthetic. “Book of dreams” is a dynamic concord of live trumpet, kalimba, rodos piano, three guitars, the sound of rain, barely touching one another, and programmed electronic echoes of the dream worlds - all tempered by three male SHB voices. Linguistically versatile, the collection features songs in English by vocalist-songwriter Aura (“U.F.O.”) and Sadme (“TPF”), in Russian by Raduga (“Last Time”), and in the Nigerian-Russian version of ebonics by Alex Neby. The fine melodious texture of the ethereal “Other Places” was arranged around the chatter of an electronic translator. English is still preferred - because of “being a less Earth-bound language than the more down-to-Earth Russian.”In “Deep wonderful sleep” to three guitars and a violin tuning to each other and to dub pulsations, half-phrases in English, as if heard in a dream-state, take one from the Earth’s gravitational field into the zone of lunar weightlessness. Ethereal, unbound and romantic, Lunateka’s music brightens one’s daily routine, reminds us of the beauty of the world, and tunes one into the pulse of the Universe.
