I scribbled my first rhyme on the back of a manilla folder in 4th grade the day after I heard "La Di Da Di" by Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh. That seems like it was decades ago...wait that was decades ago - 2 plus even. Ga damn, where on earth did all the time go? I guess when the music gets in your blood at an early age, you stick with it through and through, right? And that's what I do: stick to it. Music has given me the privilege to creatively express. And even after an extended break, making music still feels like a natural thing to do.
So who is Attica Black? Attica Black is not just a rapper who talks about himself in the third person. I'm a lyricist. If it doesn't look good on paper, it's not making it into a recording booth. More than just an emcee, I strive to make music that's poetically sound and good for the soul. It's all about getting a point and an attitude across without cursing ever 3rd bar to fill up word space but doing so without the self-righteous know-it-all ego. It's also about thoughtfully touching on a subject in a way that hasn't quite been done or than hasn't yet been explored; creating music that someone can listen to casually or in depth, depending on the mood and moment.
My mantra: I'm a reflection of the world shining my own light in turn. We can all eat BBQ and slap some bones at the end of the day, or we can chill out and break down the world and our place in it. Just go with the flow.
Speaking of "flow," as I knock out new tracks, feel free to be honest in your feedback and even when just saying "Hey Black." I don't need to be the emcee on the throne. I'm cool milling around with the people.
