THE POSSE

About Me

Once, here, upon a time where there is deepest need to find artistic expression-But where? How? Where was our platform? After short lived victories-rude awakenings unkempt promises-and impossible goals put before us and investing so much time in them-for what? success? fame? Yes. Then one fatal day the brilliant actor Calvin Simpson was tragically taken away from the world's stage, his comic timing was phenomenal, his dramatic presence immense thus a void was created. As the Theatre Royal Stratford East prepared to pay tribute to Calvin, Philip Hedley the then artistic director summoned 10 of his contemporaries: Roger Griffiths, Michael Buffong, Robbie Gee, Eddie Nester, Wilbert Johnson, Brian Bovell, Sylvester Williams,Treva Etienne, Victor Romero and Gary McDonald. We were to perform an improvised sketch but before we could begin the audience erupted as we all appeared on stage together for the first time ever, could this be fate? Called upon again at a charity event and placed last in the running order and having audience members coming up to us and saying "We only stayed around to watch you guys" It was clearly evident something had to be done. We gathered around a table and talked and talked for hours which lead to days, nights and then weeks till we finally got it in a nutshell. Imagine an empty milk bottle (the business) with every black actor and actress inside it. Success, fame and money is the air. Imagine once through the neck of the bottle you'll have more air than you'll ever need. Imagine everyone rushing like mad in the neck, so determined are we, so fierce is the competition that they all get squashed in the neck of the bottle. The little supply of air has stopped leaving the rest to suffocate. Maybe one or two get through but what a rarity to find one that hasn't been battered and maimed so badly, that even the air could not revive them. So you see we have to smash the bottle, or walk through the neck in an orderly fashion. And so came THE POSSE armed and dangerous realizing that there's "no justice just us"tretch
