About Me

After growing up with the new synthersizer bands of the 1980s Martin has always followed the electroninc sound. After building up a MIDI studio and writing many electronic songs and recording several demos with a little success, Martin discovered the sheer beauty of several things: The minimalism of Arvo Part, the music of Henryk Gorecki, the piano sonata's of Beethoven, the creativity of Fredrick Chopin, the back to basics of just using the piano. "Electronic synths and fancy studio gadgets will never write a good piece of music, they can only cover up poorly concieved ideas. Electroninc music has it's place of course, but you cannot hide poor music from just the piano (or guitar)". Says Martin.Vince Clarke from Erasure and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode both write on guitar! Using the project name; A citizen and I, Martin uses a digital piano and music software to experiment with different methods of writing and recording piano music, as well as just a straight recorder for the simple pieces. "I write and play in more of an abstract way. Its sometimes about the method of playing or recording instead of the actual notes. Although in the end it still has to sound good. You can't beat a good tune or rhythmn or harmony" Martin has completed his third and final CD of this experimental piano music. Four tracks of which can be heard on this site along with 2 older tracks that havn't been on this page before. Several pieces from the first and second CDs have been used by a touring proffessional contemporary dance company, a short film soundtrack as well as in theatre production, and other dance companies here in the UK. The writing continues as Martin moves onto electronic music. Not electro dance music but more inventive and creative laid back atmopheric music. ..

Band Members: Martin Worrall - Digital piano and computer.
Influences: Depeche Mode, The Blue Nile, Tori Amos, Beethoven, Vangelis, Chopin, Kraftwerk, Recoil, Portishead, Bjork, Talk Talk, Mike Oldfield, Henryk Gorecki and of course Arvo Part.
Sounds Like: This piano music is written using methods developed by Martin while exploring the possibilities of the piano. A method is a set of 'rules' within which to play and write, this forces one to be creative and to get the most out of the limits you're working in. With no limits/boundries there are too many options to work with and so nothing is really ever completed. Some comparisons of the actual finished product could be made with: Ludovico Einaudi, Michael Nyman, Vangelis and perhaps Phillip Glass.
