The Cascades

About Me

The Cascades on iTunes! The two most recent Cascades albums are now available for download - either by the song, or the whole album.
Go to iTunes Store, then under Quick Links, click "Power Search".
In the Artist field, type "Cascades".
In the Title field, type "All the Way to Yesterday" or "We've Still Got the Magic" and . . . voila!
On iTunes, beware of certain "various artitsts" compilation albums that include Rhythm of the Rain. There are imposter groups out there, such as one we found in New York, calling themselves the Cascades, and claiming to have recorded the original Rhythm of the Rain, written by our very own John Claude Gummoe. If it doesn't sound like us, it's not us.
The Cascades have been around almost as long as rock music itself. The group was originally formed in 1960 aboard a U.S. Navy ship. In 1962, the band signed with Valiant Records, a Warner Brothers subsidiary and that summer released their first single, "There's a Reason", penned by singer John Claude Gummoe. In November 1962, the group followed up with another song by Gummoe, the wildly successful "Rhythm of the Rain", which in 1963 became the third largest selling record in the world.
The Cascades recorded several more albums for different labels, but the groundbreaking "Rhythm of the Rain" album was the most successful. Over the years there have been some personnel changes, but the group's signature sound remains fresh and pure.
Current lineup: Founder John Gummoe remains as principal lead vocalist. Tony Grasso (bass, guitar and vocals) joined the group in 1963. Gabe Lapano (keyboard, vocals) joined in 1966. The newcomer is Charles Crews (guitar, vocals), a Cascade since 1995. Their current CD release is "All the Way to Yesterday", on Warner Music.
Interesting notes:
Yes, the band actually took it's name from a box of Cascade dishwasher detergent!
According to Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), "Rhythm of the Rain" was the ..9 most performed song of the 20th century.
The group took a break from touring in the late '70s, but never stopped recording. The Cascades began actively touring again in 2004.
"Rhythm of the Rain" has been covered by well over 100 other artists - some highly successful, some not - and has been recorded in over a dozen languages.
