MARIA IOANNA XANTHAKI is a choreographer, dancer, and video dance artist.
She was born in Athens, where she started
having dance and music lessons at the age of 6.
She gave her first dance performance at the age of 7 and
her first concert at the age of 9. She started her
dance studies in Nana Kandili's private dance school,
training in classical ballet
and jazz dance. She further continued her studies in
the American college of Greece, where she mostly trained in classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz and
tap dance and she earned a BA degree in
performing arts, contemporary dance as well as a Bsc in
international business, management. During her
time in Athens, Maria Ioanna, attended numerous master classes in contemporary dance with David Dorffman,
Keren Levi, Jeremy Nelson, Ballets C de la B,
Lisa Race, and Milton Myers among others, and
performed in various theatres, galleries,
and for the Greek television.
In 2005 Maria Ioanna moved in London and earned
her MA degree in Choreography from Laban University
studying dance composition with Valerie Dunlop Preston,
Tony Thatcher, Fin Walker – among others, and
film composition with Miranda Pennell as well as
visual design with Bock & Vincenzi. During her stay
in London, she attended various master classes and
seminars in contemporary dance, classical
ballet, contact improvisation, and film with
Rosalind Crisp, Yvonne Rainer, Catherine Bennett,
Lauren Potter, and Isabel Mortimer.
Maria Ioanna has been composing movement, working
on visual design, and running collaborations on film,
music and costume design as well as
performing in a number of venues and festivals
around Europe including:

Maria Ioanna Xanthaki's works are visually captivating and usually
combine video and live performance. She is
currently based in Athens designing movement
for theatre productions and working on the
choreographic movement of camera when creating live
movement.
