About Me

You are now marked on my profile visitor map!
Sum & Substance strive to reinvent, create, and entertain with their eclectic taste and innovative delivery. Their live show consists of Braden Selsback playing hip-hop/jazz/latin style beats while Karl Roth overlays the rest of the music. Sum & Substance does this by creating a "platform loop" on one instrument to a beat provided by Braden. (A "platform loop" is one instrument recorded and played back live on a continuous loop, allowing the player of the instrument to put the instrument down, while the line he just recorded is playing continuously). After this first loop is layed down and steady, Karl begins to layer other instruments (ranging from guitar and paino; to saxaphones and cello) on top of each other, creating a large, full sound. This experimental setup provides for not only a musical experiance, but an interestingly captivating live show. It allows the audiance to watch music be created quickly and efficiantly. Music that mimics the sounds of up to an eight piece band, while being played and overlayed by only two members. Sum & Substance's music is a reflection of this experimentation that drives their careers. Each song is created with actual instruments, done with actual playing. Each layer one hears is a layer created by a member of the band, and the only samples used are the quotes, cuts from old radio shows, and from time to time, a digital drum sample (only once so far). Sum & Substance is the creation of two musicians striving to reinvent, create and push the boundries of music and their many influences. They intend to continue to create, and entertain all who come to see as they move forward.---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------
