About Me

Kimi Djabate was born musician. He's from a village in Guinea-Bissau composed exclusively of griots. Some centuries ago, Djabate's ancestrals - from Mali, west Africa - were on tour. When they played to the king of Guinea, he loved their music so much that invited them to stay, offering them this territory - Tabato. Tabato is a centre for learning music and is worldly recognized for its handcrafted skills: making musical instruments. Balafon, kora, tama.dundumba, djidundu, kone, negelin, are only a few of the variety of instruments known to many.Kimi's mother and father and brothers and sisters, they are all professional musicians. At the age of 3, Djabate was playing with his first little balafon. He specialized in this instrument since he was 8 and was introduced to many new instruments during the course of his upbringing. He was later sent to Sonako (a neighbouring village) to learn how to play kora, which helped the begining of his guitar skills. His wish to create music grew rapidly and so did his collection of instrumentals, such as drums, dundumba, negelin and tama. Due to this expansion of knowledge in music, he participated in many traditional music events and formations during his youth. Kimi Djabate has been in Portugal since 1994, where he has collaborated with several great musicians.In this first CD he is able to express his emotional connection to love and the importance of family, to the love/hate war of the modern political world, softening the energy with lyrics which help us to remember the beautiful things life has to offer.: MpresaPortatil Profile Editor body { background-color: rgb(255,255,255);}
