Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was founded on Wednesday, January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. The idea for its formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. She viewed the Sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.The Sorority was incorporated on January 29, 1913 and has gradually branched out to become the channel through which selected college-trained women improve social and economic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; and strives to be of service to all mankind.The Epsilon Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered on May 17, 1970.
