TBFKA The Chris & Joylene Show

About Me

The story starts with the namesakes, Chris and Joylene. They met in a band called CheapPaperbackRomance. The band didn't work out. They did. They continued playing together, until they stopped for a while. Really sad story. But then they came back, having stayed in contact with their loyal bassist Adam, and found their drummer Frank. And now they play. It's a happier ending. Or is it a beginning? It is important to note that The Chris and Joylene Show is a partnership between four people, not a couple with a faceless backing band. There's entirely too much arguing for that. Not arguing; discussion.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Chris, Joylene, Adam, Frank [in order of appearance]
Influences: Entirely too many things to mention, just starting with Adam and Chris's collections. And you know, if we start listing them, you'll think that's what we sound like. And that's just not right. We do all seem to like lots of 60s and 70s bands, but not neccesarily the exact same ones (that holds especially true for the titular couple). For example - at least 3/4 of the band LOVES Queen. Not sure about Frank. But see? We have almost no Queen-like musical tendencies. You hear we're influenced by Queen, you think a certain thing. And we aren't that thing. Chris grew up on showtunes. Adam played Prog. Joylene did a cappella arranging. Frank was in a band in LA for a year. None of those things really gives you any ideas about us. Or, not the right ideas.
Sounds Like: Those tracks on the player on the page, although better than that. And, you know, hopefully us. We work a particularly odd little patch of musical area for Baltimore, in that it's not that odd. We're, for lack of a better term, a pop band. We are frustratingly lacking in helpful descriptive prefixes and suffixes. Not really an indie pop band, although we have some friends in that area, and have played shows and even swapped band members with some of them. Not a full on rock band, although we share a bit more of that sound (and quite a few more records in some of our personal collections) than the indie scene, and we certainly have rocking aspects. We have a female singer who just sings. She doesn't really scream (like a hard rock/ alterna rock female singer), or jump around in a sports bra (like a post ska/ No Doubt influenced front woman), or engage in vocal gymnastics (like a converted R&B performer). She sings in the band, not over or in front of it. We have an accomplished rhythm section that drives the music, and plays their instruments well, but doesn't push it into an area of a punk band or a hard rock band. They also play for the song. We have a guitarist who, while he doesn't think much of his playing either way, seems to keep up ok with the aforementioned rhythm section. There are a few guitar solos, but they are usually restrained and preplanned. There isn't really any jamming to speak of, although there are sections where a more jam like sound could happen. We don't do any covers to speak of, sincere or irony-laden. And we aren't that irony laden in general. Or completely sincere. And there are harmonies. Not power pop harmonies, as keeping with the 'where do we fit' idea, we aren't a power pop band either. Nobody dresses alike, the harmonies aren't that high, and the songs aren't power pop. So, yeah. A pop band. That's us. Hope that helps.
