History In The Making Making history seemed like nothing to these Native American brothers as they were the first to compete in the Olympic Trials, the ones before them were the Spinks boys, and that same year as the Hinkey brothers were the Dirrell brothers.
Derek and Tyler Hinkey started boxing at an early age. Of course, they have eachother, which plays a vital role in their success in boxing. As the saying goes, "The strength of the wolf is in the pack and the strength of the pack is in the wolf".
Derek started boxing on fight cards at seven years old, one year under the age limit. He fought Silver Gloves and J.O's. As a youngster, Derek was commented on by various coaches as fighting like a Mike Tyson, only going forward never backward. He won variuos J.O. and Silver Glove titles. Derek steared away from boxing as he entered high school, where he was a stand out athlete in track, football, and basketball. Derek made first team all state as a strong safety and wide receiver in football. In basketball, he was all state as a guard. Derek matured late as a senior in high school. He grew 4 inches as his last year of high school came to an end. He played over seas one year and realized the passion, or love, was not really there. He then went to Kansas searching for that passion.
It wasn't until his homecoming, back to the little town of McDermitt, that he found that love. That love was the sport of boxing with his dad and brother. Derek grew into his 6'1" frame as a middleweight, where he continues to dominate the opponents across from him, competing in international and national fights. He currently holds victories over ..1,4,6 ranked amateur. Derek has dominated the state of Nevada for four years.
Derek currently resides in Las Vegas where he trains and will be representing America in the Canadian Golden Gloves. He has worked with various professionals such as Kelvin "Concrete" Davis,Vasilli Jirov, Winky Wright, Hashim "Rock" Rahman, Micheal Simms Jr., Eric "Hitman" Regan, and various others.
One look at Tyler and you see one hell of a man, at 6'2" 270 pounds. Tyler started at the tender age of five years old in competition at 80 pounds. A lot has changed for Tyler and his 80 pounds, he remains a devastating puncher and yet a slick boxer when need be. Looking at Tyler you can only imagine the strength and power, but hold on now, throw in his speed. "I had to learn to be fast, look at my brother, I had to chase him and catch him somehow", says Tyler.
Tyler also was a standout athlete in basketball, but football was unreal. Tyler played every position from QB, END, TACKLE, LB, and one mean FULLBACK.
Tyler continued his boxing while in high school. He made the semi-finals in the 19 and under in Mississippi where his nemisis, current #1 rated, Mike Wilson out pointed him. Tyler also has victories over ..3,6,7 top amateurs. Tyler then traveled to Penn. where he spoiled Jason Gavern's last hometown fight before Jason turned pro.
Derek says he knows his brother will be a heavyweight champion and will be right behind him. One day, in the near future, these boys will represent the Native American people on that highest level of boxing. Derek says, "If I do not gain what I look for in boxing, maybe I can be that inspiration to a lil' Indian boy or girl, so one day we will have our champion. But I believe in my heart that I will be successful".
Derek no longer is mistaken for Tyson, but for Roy Jones or Floyd Mayweather. Yet he would rather be regarded as a versitile fighter, like water with a no shape. Tyler was asked that question and came back with, "I just like to fight, but yeah, I can be a pretty boxer too!".
Take one look and in one you see strength and power, in the other you see quickness and speed. Now which one represents which? True passion and true love for the sport of boxing has been forseen.
