About Me

Two-time grammy nominated JOEL MARTINEZ is the drummer you are hearing on all of these recordings. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy them.Joel Martinez has played drums and percussion professionally in Chicago since 1989. The original drummer of the Chicago-based Latino punk band Los Crudos (1991-1995), he recorded most of the material on their Discography. From 1998 to 2002, he performed with local theater groups performing musicals like West Side Story, Crazy for You, the Sound of Music, the Fantastics and musical revues featuring music from the 1940’s to the present. In the spring of 2002, he graduated from VanderCook College of Music with a degree in Instrumental Music Education. While attending VanderCook, he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity, where held the offices of Fraternal Education Officer or FEO and Vice-President of the Xi Kappa Chapter. Soon after graduation, he joined the Folk group Sones de Mexico Ensemble Chicago. For the next three and a half years he performed all over the country with SdM, playing for former Mexican President Vicente Fox and in some incredible places like Orchestra Hall at Chicago Symphony Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Outdoor Festival of the Lincoln Center in New York City, Chicago’s Hothouse and Old Town School of Folk Music, The Harris Theater for the Performing Arts and the Philadelphia Folk Festival before an audience of 10,000. He has had the distinction of working with the Chicago Sinfonietta when SdM was invited to perform the musical venture called Encuentro, which was written by his former band mate for Orchestra and Mexican Folk Band. The piece was performed at Symphony Center and Dominican University. He has performed with Howard Levy and Richard Dworsky of NPR's A Prairie Home Companion. He has performed and recorded with Patty Ortega, South American folk singer Luis Jahn, recorded for a World Library Publishing artist and has performed with the doo-wop group Stuck In the Fifties and also Caliente (Santana/motown/latin rock). Joel also performed with the Old Plank All-Stars in the fall of 2006 after introducing them to the joy of cajón.He is a Gereral Music Instructor/Band Director by day in a Chicago Public School. The song --Last Week-- was written by John Riley and is used by permission. Mr. Riley is a distinguished drummer, educator, author, and composer. He wrote the book "The Art of Bop Drumming" which is where you can find this song minus drums for yourself and he also wrote "Beyond Bop Drumming", . He was kind enough to let me use this tune for my page and I want to thank him. Thank you John Riley!!! You can visit him at http://www.johnriley.org/The song --Afro Waltz-- was written by Bill O'Connell, Robby Ameen, and Lincoln Goines and was used by permission from Robby Ameen, the Co-author of the book Funkifying the Clave. He is an awesome musician and drummer. Please visit his web page at www.robbyameen.com Check out his music. He has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Ruben Blades, Marc Anthony and also his own group, Seis del Solar. Thank you Robby!!!! The song --Arithmetic-- was written by Derrick Hershey and recorded by: Rebecca Sullivan: vocals, Derrick Hershey:guitar, Tony Wisniewski:bass, Joel Martinez:drumsThe songs Last Week, Afro Waltz, and Drum and Bass Improv were recorded with a Roland V-Tour TD-6V electronic drum kit. The songs Arithmetic and A Tempest in June were both recorded with an acoustic drum kit from mixed American vintage drums: a Ludwig bass drum, a Camco floor tom, a 60's Rogers 12" rack tom and a 70's 14" rack. I used the same drums and converted the floor tom into a 16" bass drum and used the 14" as a floor tom for Arithmetic. And of course, my sweet 5X14 Bison Custom maple snare.
