About Me

“His lyrics emotionally honest, voice vulnerable and he touched the audience with his charismatic humour” – MX Magazine, Melbourne.
Gavin Ingham is a contagious singer-songwriter from Brisbane with a style that blends the diversity of such genres as folk & pop, with a sound that could be described as having major influences from the works of such greats as Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg and our own Paul Kelly. Critics have described Gavin’s work as a unique style of “nice-guy indie-rock” with a hint of an “Australian pseudo-gangsta rap hybrid”. This has lead to the development of his own style of “Articulate urban indie folk-pop…..with a bit of gangsta rap (All in an Aussie accent). All this whilst being the nice-guy love-child of Paul Kelly and Billy Bragg and writing his own songs.”
Gavin was born and raised in Sydney, and adores his musical home town of Melbourne, but has found a second home here in the inspiring town of “Brisneyland”.
He grew up on a stable diet of 80’s movies, NBA basketball and the musical influences of Sesame Street.
Gavin has a conflicting love affair with music. He isn’t sure what style of music he loves most. Gavin has been writing songs the majority of his 29 years on this planet, but it wasn’t until 2003 that he “… found his songwriting voice…”. Gavin says that he always tried to be a ‘rock-star’, but his songs were always simple compositions with basic, emotionally-shallow lyrics like “…the CAT sat on the MAT with a HAT…” etc. He is now assured that ‘Singer-Songwriter/Pop-Folk’ is where he best can combine his wit and unique musicianship with his larrikin demeanor. It wasn’t until Gavin started singing in his natural Australian accent, and allowed his songwriting to utilise strong narrative, that he fully felt he could contribute something of worth to the average punter and the local music industry. He now refers to his music as “Folk ‘n’ Roll”!
Gavin prefers performing to intimate audiences with only his acoustic guitar, named Roger, and his wit, charm and truthful lyrics transported by his unassuming vocals. He is currently in an intense process of seeking other musicians that will complement his sound, to form his backing band for his gigs. Gavin is not opposed to the sound of stadium-rock, and screaming distortion filled guitar (he states that Queen is one of his favourite bands with “Bohemian Rhapsody” being his choice song of all-time), he just really prefers the propinquity of one raw, wooden, acoustic guitar to accompany his poetical neo-folk lyrical style. Gavin prides himself on his lyrics. From his theatrical training, he has a keen sense of the English language and therefore he regards his lyrics as an integral part to the “Gavin Ingham Musical Experience”, and feels that the choice to accompany his vocals with a solo acoustic guitar serves his performance best.
Gavin is in the Triple J Unearthed competition. For those not familiar with this comp, it is Triple J Radio Station's way of finding new unsigned musical talent. From this competition they find acts to play on the station and also give them opportunities to perform at some the country's high-profile music festivals.
When Gavin is not charming the world with his dulcet tones, he moonlights as a Theatre Practitioner. Since completing his actor training, he has gained a wide range of performance experience. His acting performance experience includes working with professional theatre companies, touring educational shows, writing and performing in cabarets, musicals, pantomimes, street theatre, clowning, corporate entertainment, short films and television commercials. Yes, he was “Drunk Guy no.2 coming out of the toilet” in a Drink Driving TV ad. Gavin, by the way, does not condone drink-driving in any way shape or form.
Gavin is also a script-writer and Theatre Director who has had his plays performed for the theatre, and has Directed for the University of Queensland. He dreams of one day becoming a clown doctor: - a la Patch Adams style.
Above all, Gavin loves his audience!
