Otep - Buried Alive

Hi, I'm Jerry Wright, all-around freak of nature and bassist/back-up vocalist for OF THE GODS, an up and coming metal band from Las Vegas. I've been into music all my life, but started actively pursuing it at the age of 12, when I received a "top-of-the-line" Harmony 6-string from Fingerhut for Christmas. I had originally wanted to play bass, but I was just happy to have something electric to mess with, something with some more balls. After I found distortion, there was no looking back. Combined with heavy doses of White Zombie and Black Sabbath, along with new flavors like Korn and Coal Chamber, a general style began to develop. I have always liked all types of music, however, and never miss a chance to pick up some Steve Miller or the theme from Tales from the Crypt (Danny Elfman is the shit).
Anyway, one day a friend of mine, Heather, who also happened to be a fledgling musician, said she had something "new" for me, something dark and gothic (we shared and affinity for the good ol' MM) yet supremely heavy and stylistic. The album happened to be Cradle of Filth's conceptual masterpiece, Cruelty and the Beast.
The musical ideas simply blew me away (Robin Eaglestone has since become a creative reference of sorts), while the amazingly in-depth and downright evil lyricism combined with the growls, cackles, howls, and blood-curdling screams used to bring the material to life were to influnce me heavily on a vocal level as well.
Enter Ed Fuchs. An acquaintance of mine from middle school(he moved in seventh grade to attend Heather's school, oddly enough) we became fast friends and colleages after being spurned by the "guitar asshole" circle of Jimmy Page wannabes we never really felt a part of, anyway. He showed me some songs he had written, and afterseveral storms of jamming, conversing, and collaborating, Parathion was born. A kind of hybrid, emo-meets-metal, I'm-fucked-up-you're-fucked-up-we're-all-fucked-up approach developed and over the course of five years, a female drummer (our good friend Gina), three guitarists, thirty-some-odd shows (including the Las Vegas Metalfest with Suffocation, Deicide, and Strapping Young Lad), and building dynamic tension growing within the band, directions were solidified, lives were changed, destinies were fulfilled, hearts were broken, and music was made. After a brief post-Ed run as Vicious Cycle with now-Corrupt-the-Righteous guitarist Kirk, the ever-present Gina, and me holding the reigns and pulling the weight of a dying band, the book was finally closed (for now) on the expressive, hard-hitting, emotion-laden music that started as two friends trying to find themselves as musicians and songwriters.Enter Corrupt the Righteous. Longtime schoolmates and smoke-out buddies, Mike Simpson, Darrin Wong, and Chad Peters decided to start a group of their own, this time inspired more by the intensity and balls-out heaviness of bands like Pantera and Slayer than the emotive cry of bands like Korn and The Deftones. A sick, twisted, and uniquely original style devoloped. After actually upstaging Vicious Cycle once or twice, and witnessing first-hand the downfall of a band they had once looked up to, the entity known as Corrupt the Righteous fell together like pieces of a well-fit puzzle. Having been bored as hell being out the scene and looking for a new challenge, I joined up one week after Kirk did and played the first show as a five-piece a mere two weeks later, after having to learn, then craft the basslines to the better part of eight songs. This task was made slightly easier by the fact that, having been there through the genesis of the band, I had jammed with and recorded some bass for them before. To those who know my style, however, know that I like to put an extreme amount of thought and feel into my lines, and was in fact, up until recently, still toying with some of the parts.
So after Corrupt the Righteous recorded a full-length album entitled HELL OF A WORLD, Darrin our singer quit and we were back at square one. After a month or two of fruitless searching, Landon hooked up with us and we formed OF THE GODS. We are currently working our collective asses off playing shows, promoting, and trying to get signed so we can finally escape the glorified fuckfest that is the Las Vegas local metal scene. Through all this, I still treasure my role as singer/songwriter and also have about an album or two of my own material as well, which, as you've probably guessed, touches on everything from Alice in Chains to Dimmu Borgir and will hopefully one day be released if not toured upon in the future (cross your fingers).
Well, here's to you! You've read through my whole spiel without falling asleep. Are you high or something? I am. Just kidding. Ok, no not really. Peace.
