Even though the dark metal group Somnus has disbanded, this myspace page was started by me (Rhiannon) to promote a "new" old song (Shadow of Centuries Untold) that was just finished being recorded in 2006, and to allow those who still appreciate the music of Somnus to be able to do so on myspace. I still think this stuff is great - I'm proud of it and want to share!
The concept of Somnus was founded in 1995 by Scott Hilberg (vocals/guitar), Erik Rueschman (guitar), and Lou Spencer (bass). 1996 saw the completion of the lineup by Rhiannon (keyboards/vocals) and Scott Shetler (percussion). This eclectic group set out to create a very heavy and intense sound invoking dark and desolate imagery while capturing the full dynamics of an orchestra. After writing the first few songs, Somnus released the 1997 demo "To Return the Crimson Skies."
Somnus also began playing many annual shows, such as the World Series of Metal in Cleveland (1996-2002) and the Michigan Death fest (1997-1998, 2002). Chris Stolle (ex-Thanatopsis) replaced Shetler on percussion in late 1997, and then the band recorded "Within" and "Fulfilling the Throne" for a promo cassette as well as "Seasons in the Abyss" for the Dwell Slayer tribute Gateway to Hell. The band also played at big events like Milwaukee Metalfest (1998-2002) and March Metal Meltdown (1999-2001) while supporting kickass national and international acts like Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, My Dying Bride, Opeth, Amorphis, Kovenant, King Diamond, Moonspell, In Flames, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Immortal, Candlemass, Trouble, etc.
In March of 2000, Somnus's debut CD Awakening the Crown was released on Root of All Evil Records, and has been well received by the metal community. Erik and Lou departed the band, and after a brief stint with evil guitarist Dave Ingram, Dennis Downey (lead guitar) and Steve Rolf (bass) completed the band's final line-up. Somnus' second CD, entitled Through Creation's End was released on Root of All Evil Records in June 2002, and has received RAVE reviews from fans and zines everywhere! This CD contains a bonus video track, a first for the band. If you do not have these CDs, please send us a message and we'll sell them to you!
Since 2003, the members of Somnus have ventured down different paths and even moved across the country (Scott in Massachusettes, Rhia in Colorado). Somnus wishes to thank everyone who has shown them support throughout their 7 year career as a band. METAL HAILS TO ALL!
