Who is SOLIDARITY NOT CHARITY?
Solidarity not Charity is a collective of individuals committed to...
1) supporting the residents of New Orleans in the rebuilding process
2) creating a space for youth of color from New Orleans, Chicago, and the Bronx to share their stories, engage in discussion around displacement, criminalization and lack of quality education as it’s manifested in communities of color and the implications for our communities.
3) Understanding of each others history and struggles.
Solidarity not Charity partnered up with the Peña del Bronx, To bring youth of color together to deepen their understanding of the other, going beyond external and geographic differences. La Pena is a non-profit in the heart of the Bronx’s which name translate as "Let's go to the rock" and comes from a poem by the Chilean poet Violeta Parra. It refers to the rock where earlier indigenous peoples gathered to plan their resistance movement. La Peña is home to neglected generations of African Americans, Puerto Ricans and recent immigrants of various ethnic backgrounds, including Africans, Ecuadorians, Hondurans, Mexicans and the lesser-known Garifuna. La Peña reaches out to the most disenfranchised, especially the hungry, homeless, unemployed, undocumented and HIV-positive. All are welcome with no papers required and no questions asked. La Peña activities include food distribution, help with the citizenship process, English and Spanish classes, artistic workshops and attention to issues such as domestic violence, drug addiction and homelessness. La Peña is open daily and staffed by community residents and volunteers. La Pena believes that any activity can happen so long as the community organizes to make it so.
