Despite what the multi layered sound might tell you, everything you hear from Teddy Kumpel on record and stage is played live. With innovative use of looping technology and his vast experience mangling vintage sounds Teddy Kumpel effortlessly creates myriad textures that make you think there must be a whole slew of musicians hiding backstage. A veritable funkdafied psychadelic orchestra posing as a rock trio!
Teddy Kumpel has been a sought after guitar slinger for artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Feist, Marshall Crenshaw and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors as well as a respected producer/mixer in NY's fertile indie rock scene. Now he is ready to return to an earlier pursuit, improvised music with deep pocket and no artificial boundaries. "I've been a songwriter for EMI and a sideman for Nine Inch Nails but before that I led an instrumental funk band called "Nome Sane?" with Tony Scherr on bass, Andy Middleton on saxophone and the great Brian Dunne on drums. I feel a return to that music now but in a new form: as a power trio with occasional special guests."
Teddy has jammed with artists as diverse as Feist, Rickie Lee Jones, Nine Inch Nails, Marshall Crenshaw, David Grisman, Laura Branigan, Teddy Thompson, Ana Egge, Billy Martin, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, Megan Palmer, Sharissa, Saul Zonana, John Robinson, Michael Bland, Omar Hakim, Kenny Wollesen's marching band, Janet Jackson, Paquito D'Rivera, Jenny Scheinman, Jonah Smith, Ric Firebracci, Will Lee, The Zen Tricksters, Jim Pin, Funk Filharmonik, Michael Blake and Blake Tartare, Toots Hibbert, Toots Thielmans, Frankie Paul, Timothy "Speed" Levitch, Chris Barron, Aaron Comess and Eric Schenkman of the Spin Doctors, Arnie Lawrence, Martha Redbone, Goodie Mob, Sex Mob, Tony Scherr, Tower of Power, Leslie Mendelson, Clark Gayton's Explorations in Dub, Spottiswoode and His Enemies, Frankie Paul, Dennis Brown, The Barbarians, The Supremes, Mbalafunk, India Arie and many feature films including Anchorman and Taladega Nights..
