Natalie D-Napoleon - Here In California
It seemed only fitting that when Perth singer-songwriter Natalie D-Napoleon made her SxSW debut last year that Paul Kelly should also be part of the Australian contingent. In taking her musical crusade to the United States, Natalie delighted in delving into the vast traditions of great American singer-songwriters that had infused her own musical yearnings for so long.
There she gleaned the awe-inspiring revere that artists such as Guy Clarke, Kate Wolf, and Victoria Williams command and it inspired Natalie to turn her musical attention back home and started sprinkling her set with songs by their Australian counterparts. And one of the songs that raised the most American eyebrows was her interpretation of Paul Kelly’s “To Her Door”.
“Part of it was definately being in California and feeling a little homesick,” responded Natalie when asked about the initial inspiration behind her new recording. “So I started messing around with some of my favourite Australian songs and the one that went down the best was “To Her Door”. Then I went out to play SxSW and there was Paul Kelly!"
"I then decided to record a couple of the songs for posterity. I went to the same high school as Bon Scott – so AC/DC loomed large where I grew up. And, given that I was now in California, I thought it might be interesting to couple the Australian compositions with an offering of songs from the American artists I was discovering and make a record out of it.”
The result is Here in California – a six track recording featuring three compositions from her native Australia and three from her part-time home of California.
Along with the Paul Kelly classic, the contributions from Australia includes AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Even The Sweet Things Die” by The Jayco Brothers. The American compositions come in the form of Guy Clarke’s “LA Freeway”, Victoria Williams’ “Hummingbird”, and Kate Wolf’s “Here In California”. And with Natalie having performed with both The Jayco Brothers (in Australia) and Victoria Williams (in America), the personal nature of this undertaking takes on an even greater meaning.
Across the course of her career, Natalie has meandered a passionate path through Americana. Having been a staple of the Perth music scene for well over ten years, her evolution through ensembles such as Bloom and Flavour of the Month now sees her tapping into the very source of her inspiration. And she does so with the same grace and conviction that she has always employed within her music.

What Other Folks Have Said About Natalie D-Napoleon's Music:
"As the evening drew to a close Leonard Cohen collaborator and Santa-Barbara based singer/songwriter Julie Christensen lent some countrified harmonies to the chorus of 'After the Flood', fittingly titled, for now the floodgates of D-Napoleon's enormous talent have been opened on either side of the Pacific, we can hope to hear a lot more from her on this end."
The Santa Barbara Independent (USA)
"....above all it’s the soaring vocals of Natalie echoing a raw sincerity that makes you stop and really listen."
Pelican Magazine (Australia)
"This arresting recording, release from Australian singer-songwriter Natalie D-Napoleon, offers up a delectable selection of energetic alt-country gems....Her writing is infused with passion and fervor, making 'After the Flood' both a reflective and adventurous romp - a tempting harbinger of Napoleon's future Santa Barbara appearances."
The Santa Barbara Independent (USA)
'After the Flood' is a beautifully beguiling solo debut from Natalie D-Napoleon, who has directly changed the face of country music. With a mix of passionate lyrics, delivered with an enchanting voice that makes this EP a small token of what this artist can do and which we hope to have more of in the future."
Perth Sounds (Australia)
"Tonight however it was Natalie D-Napoleon with the Mojave’s finest. Her music sat seamlessly beside compositions from some of the finest writers currently on offer. Sunday evenings at Pappy & Harriet’s are renowned for throwing forth a surprise or two. But rarely are they as sweet as the one served up on this night."
X-Press Magazine (Perth)
"D-Napoleon's songs of love and longing, sung with an endearing country twang and laced with an Australian accent, trace a raw yet joyous path through human relationships.
