JAY SMITH

Jay Smith is an award-winning songwriter, singer and guitar-player based in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Jay has demonstrated his musical versatility playing guitar with Cape Breton’s three-piece powerhouse Rock Ranger, old-time country act The Squatters, Newfoundland songwriters Mark Bragg and Blair Harvey, Halifax-based songwriter Al Tuck and Grammy award-winning songwriter Gordie Sampson.In 2007 Jay signed on as full-time guitarist for Matt Mays & El Torpedo (MM&ET). Since then, Jay spent much of his time in the studio and on the road in support of the band’s latest Juno-nominated & ECMA award winning album “Terminal Romance”. The band’s sophomore album was recorded in England with producer Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy) and mixed in Vancouver with Mike Fraser (AC/DC). Jay has played countless Canadian and US dates with MM&ET both headlining and supporting such acts as Kid Rock, Chris Cornell, Sam Roberts and Blue Rodeo. Recently, Jay was presented as SOCAN Songwriter of the Year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards for co-writing Gordie Sampson’s hit “We Are Young And So Is The Night” with Gordie Sampson and JT Harding.
